The Winnipeg Jets will look to return to their winning ways against the rolling Boston Bruins at the Canada Life Centre on Tuesday, December 10.
My Bruins vs. Jets predictions and NHL picks anticipate tidy defenses and goals being tough to come by for both clubs tonight.
Jets vs Bruins prediction
My Jets pick
Under 5.5 (-112 at Pinnacle)
My Jets analysis
While the Winnipeg Jets have slipped since their 15-1 start, they’ve remained solid defensively during their active 5-8 run — allowing just 2.09 goals per 60 minutes and 2.41 expected goals per 60 at 5-on-5.
The biggest difference has been the Jets dipping to a 6.32 team shooting percentage at 5-on-5 during the lull after firing at a 9.58 mark during the heater.
Additionally, Winnipeg actually has a slightly better Corsi For percentage (50.9% vs. 48.9%) with fewer expected goals allowed at 5-on-5 (2.41 vs. 2.59) during the 13-game stretch than through the first 16.
It’s been a different story for the Boston Bruins. The club has gone 7-2 since Joe Sacco took over behind the bench, and the Bruins have surrendered just 2.08 goals and 1.86 expected goals per 60 at 5-on-5. Defense was always Boston's calling card, but the Bruins have tightened up even more with Sacco calling the shots.
Expect top-tier goaltending tonight, too.
Winnipeg No. 1 Connor Hellebuyck’s .917 SV%, 2.14 GAA, and 0.71 goals saved above average per 60 minutes all rank second among the 30 goalies with at least 800 minutes this season. Meanwhile, Boston starter Jeremy Swayman sports a .918 SV% and 2.01 GAA through six starts since the coaching change.
I’m also anticipating special teams working to the Under tonight. Boston sports a league-low 12.0 power-play percentage, while Winnipeg has an unsustainably high 29.1% mark, and statistical correction has already kicked in with the Jets posting a 14.6 PP% since the 15-1 start. Of course, the Bruins also have a league-best 92.9 penalty-kill percentage.
Additionally, Winnipeg point-per-game scorer Nikolaj Ehlers (lower body) remains on injured reserve, while Boston star David Pastrnak is nursing an upper-body injury and has only found the back of the net once in his past 11 games.
Pastrnak didn’t practice Monday, and if he plays Tuesday, I’m expecting it to be at less than 100%.
Jets vs Bruins Odds analysis
There has been a small move to the Winnipeg side of this moneyline, with the Jets opening at -132 and trading at -134 as of Tuesday morning.
The status of Bruins' winger David Pastrnak could have an impact on the number leading into puck drop, but I’m expecting No. 88 to be in the lineup for Boston.
This Under has seen the early action, and it makes sense given the highlighted defensive strengths of the two teams in front of their elite goaltenders. Winnipeg has also gone Under the number in eight of its past 10 games.
