Center fielder Adam Haseley drove in the tie-breaking run with his first major league hit in the eighth inning on Wednesday afternoon as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies scored five runs in two innings against the Padres' bullpen to defeat San Diego 7-5 in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Jay Bruce belted his third homer in his first two starts since the Phillies acquired him from the Seattle Mariners.
The Padres led 5-2 going into the seventh. But relievers Trey Wingenter and Craig Stammen gave up five runs on five hits in two innings. All five runs came with two outs in the consecutive frames.
Haseley, who was called up Tuesday after the Phillies lost Andrew McCutchen for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee, drew a walk from Wingenter to start the three-run, seventh-inning rally. Cesar Hernandez tripled with two out to score Haseley. Bryce Harper greeted Stammen by doubling home Hernandez and he scored on Jean Segura's single to tie the game.
Stammen retired the first two Phillies in the eighth before walking Scott Kingery, who raced home when Haseley's double inside the third-base bag caught the edge of the grandstands and took a wild bounce. Haseley scored on pinch hitter Andrew Knapp's single.
Right-handed reliever Juan Nicasio (1-2) was credited with the win while Stammen (4-2) took the loss. Right-hander Hector Neris, who got the final two outs in the eighth with the bases loaded, also worked the ninth to earn his 12th save.
The Phillies scored first on back-to-back, two-out doubles by Bruce and Kingery in the second.
But the Padres took a 4-1 lead with a four-run third inning that ended with back-to-back homers by Josh Naylor and Wil Myers off Phillies starter Jake Arrieta. Manny Machado doubled to open the inning and Eric Hosmer drew a walk in front of rookie Naylor's second homer into the right-field seats. Myers followed with his 11th homer.
Bruce cut the lead to 4-2 with his homer in the fourth. But the Padres got that run back an inning later when Myers drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on Ty France's single to center.
Arrieta allowed five runs on seven hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Padres right-handed starter Cal Quantrill gave up two runs on five hits and no walks with seven strikeouts in five innings. But the Padres bullpen couldn't hold the lead.
