Brett Anderson pitched 6 1/3 strong innings as the Oakland Athletics defeated the host Seattle Mariners 5-2 Friday night in the opener of a three-game series.
Anderson (9-5), a left-hander, allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts as the A's won for the eighth time in their past 10 games. Right-hander Liam Hendriks, announced earlier in the day as a substitute for the All-Star Game, pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
Anderson outdueled Mariners rookie left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (4-6), who allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out five.
The Mariners lost for the seventh time in their past eight games.
Oakland's Franklin Barreto and Seattle's Tom Murphy hit solo home runs.
The A's scored twice in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.
Matt Olson led off with a ground-rule double to right. Khris Davis then lined a single to right field that outfielder Domingo Santana bobbled, allowing Olson to score, and David took second when Santana's throw to the plate bounced over the catcher's head for his second error on the play.
Davis advanced to third on Mark Canha's groundout to the right side of the infield, and he scored on Ramon Laureano's sacrifice fly.
A's pinch-hitter Robbie Grossman added a two-run double with two outs in the ninth for the final margin.
The Mariners scored in the first inning as Mallex Smith reached on an infield single, stole second on a pickoff attempt and took third on first baseman Olson's wild throw to second. J.P. Crawford then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
The A's tied it in the third on Barreto's solo homer to left field, his first of the season.
The Mariners regained the lead on Murphy's solo shot to right-center leading off the bottom of the fifth, his ninth.
The A's had only one hit off Kikuchi, Barreto's solo homer, until the sixth. Matt Chapman singled down the left-field line with two outs but was thrown out by Seattle's Mac Williamson as Chapman attempted to stretch it into a double, ending the inning.
