Grayson Greiner knocked in the first two runs of his career, Jose Iglesias hit a two-run homer and the Detroit Tigers held off the Seattle Mariners 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Greiner, a rookie catcher, had two run-scoring hits while Iglesias ripped his second homer this season. JaCoby Jones added two hits and a run scored.
Matthew Boyd (2-3) allowed three runs on three hits with six strikeouts in six-plus innings to collect the win. Shane Greene notched his eighth save. He induced Dee Gordon to ground out with the bases loaded to end the game.
Ryon Healy scored two runs for the Mariners. Marco Gonzales (3-3) allowed four runs on 10 hits in six innings.
The Tigers squandered a scoring opportunity in the first. They loaded the bases with one out, but John Hicks bounced into a double play.
Detroit wasted three hits in the second inning. Jones got picked off first base after a leadoff single. With two runners on, Seattle right fielder Mitch Haniger caught Mikie Mahtook's fly ball at the wall.
Seattle had two baserunners with two out in the fourth, but Boyd struck out Kyle Seager to end the threat.
Detroit finally broke through in the fourth. Hicks led off with a ground-rule double and advanced on a flyout. Greiner then singled through a drawn-in infield for his first major league RBI.
Seattle tied it in the fifth. Healy walked, advanced to third on a single and scored on Gordon's sacrifice fly.
The Tigers scored three runs in the sixth. Jones' speed manufactured the first one, as he hit a line drive that bounced off Seager's knee at third base. Seager was slow to retrieve the ball, and Jones was credited with a double. Greiner then singled to right and Jones slid under Mike Zunino's tag at home plate.
Iglesias followed with his homer to left, making it 4-1.
The Mariners cut Detroit's lead to one in the seventh. Seager was hit by a pitch and Healy doubled, ending Boyd's day. Zunino and pinch hitter Ben Gamel had run-scoring groundouts against Buck Farmer.
