Old Dominion 17, Eastern Michigan 3: Ray Lawry ran for a 55-yard score in the first quarter and the Monarchs turned in a dominant defensive performance against the visiting Eagles.
Taylor Heinicke was 17-of-30 for 187 yards with one interception and Gerard Johnson rushed 19 times for 85 yards for Old Dominion (2-1), which held Eastern Michigan to 215 yards of total offense. Lawry finished with 69 rushing yards as the Monarchs won their first home game as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Bronson Hill rushed 16 times for 78 yards and Brogan Roback was 9-of-17 for 56 yards for Eastern Michigan (1-2), which lost 65-0 at Florida last Saturday. The Eagles snapped their seven-quarter scoreless streak and cut the deficit to 10-3 with 9:13 remaining when Dylan Mulder tied his career high with a 43-yard field goal.
The Monarchs answered two minutes later as Antonio Vaughan returned a punt 46 yards for a score on a play that was upheld on video review. Old Dominion forced a three-and-out on Eastern Michiganกฏs next possession and controlled the clock in the final minutes to secure the victory.
Eastern Michiganกฏs Rob Bolden replaced an inefficient Brogan at the end of the third quarter and completed 3-of-7 passes for 16 yards while rushing 12 times for 31 yards. Old Dominion bounced back from last weekกฏs 46-34 loss at North Carolina State and won despite converting just 2-of-15 on third down.
