No. 15 Texas 56, New Mexico State 7: Junior quarterback David Ash had career highs of five touchdowns and 434 total yards as the Longhorns overcame a slow start to bury the visiting Aggies.
Ash completed 20-of-28 passes for 343 yards and four touchdowns and added 91 yards and a score on the ground. Texas tallied 342 yards and five touchdowns in a 15-play stretch to break open the game and finished with a school-record 715 total yards.
New Mexico State, which forced just nine turnovers last year, recovered one fumble and grabbed two interceptions to keep Texas off the scoreboard for most of the first half. Andrew McDonald completed 32-of-46 passes for 242 yards and Joshua Bowen had a team-high eight catches for 83 yards for the Aggies.
Ash had a pair of long touchdown passes in a 40-second span after Bowen's 11-yard touchdown catch put New Mexico State ahead 7-0 late in the first half. John Harris (54 yards) and Daje Johnson (66 yards) burned the Aggies defense to give Texas the halftime lead.
The big plays continued in the second half as Johnson added a 24-yard touchdown run, Ash went 55 yards untouched and Malcolm Brown took a short pass 74 yards for a touchdown. Redshirt freshman Jalen Overstreet added 92 yards and two scores on nine carries on the Longhorns' final two drives.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas had four touchdowns of at least 50 yards Saturday after recording six last season. ... The Longhorns are 8-0 when Ash throws at least two touchdowns. ... The Aggies have lost 19 straight games to a ranked opponent.
