Washington has displayed signs of being a program on the rise and delivered a major statement on Friday night.
Sophomore quarterback Jake Browning passed for 210 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 10 Huskies scored the game's first 30 points and delivered a 44-6 dismantling of No. 7 Stanford in Pac-12 play at Seattle.
Sophomore tailback Myles Gaskins rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns for Washington (5-0, 2-0), which has won eight consecutive games dating to last season. Junior receivers John Ross and Dante Pettis and true freshman Aaron Fuller each had a scoring reception.
Washington also bottled up Cardinal star running back Christian McCaffrey. The junior All-American had just 79 yards from scrimmage (49 rushing, 30 receiving) as Stanford (3-1, 2-1) had a seven-game winning streak halted.
Senior quarterback Ryan Burns passed for 151 yards and the Cardinal had just 213 total yards. Stanford committed a season-worst 11 penalties for 100 yards and allowed eight sacks.
Senior outside linebacker Psalm Wooching had three sacks for the Huskies and senior outside linebacker Joe Mathis added two.
The Huskies built a 23-0 halftime lead and Stanford committed a key turnover 93 seconds into the second half to sabotage any attempt of a comeback.
A punt by Washington junior Tristan Vizcaino caromed off the back of Cardinal sophomore Ben Edwards and Huskies junior Lavon Coleman recovered at the Stanford 40-yard line.
Four players later, Gaskins scored on an 8-yard run to boost the lead to 30.
The Cardinal got on the board with 24 seconds left in the third quarter as Burns connected with sophomore JJ Arcega-Whiteside on a 19-yard scoring pass.
Washington answered with a 16-play, 75-yard drive that ate 9:47 off the clock and was concluded by Browning's 3-yard pass to Fuller to make it 37-6 with 5:31 left.
Coleman punctuated the rout with a 25-yard scoring run with 1:38 remaining.
McCaffrey's longest rush was 14 yards as he never could get loose against the stingy Huskies' defense. The nation's second-leading rusher did have 144 kickoff return yards on five attempts.
Washington had a 214-29 edge in rushing yards and had 423 total yards.
The loss ended Stanford's seven-game Pac-12 road winning streak -- which ties for longest in school history (2010-11).
McCaffrey had just 42 total yards (34 rushing, eight receiving) in the first half as Stanford trailed 23-0 at the break.
Washington controlled the half from the outset as Browning was 4-of-5 passing for 63 yards on the opening seven-play, 64-yard drive. He culminated the drive with a 3-yard scoring pass to Pettis but senior Cameron Van Winkle was wide left with the extra point attempt.
The Huskies traveled 55 yards on five plays during their second possession. Gaskins finished the excursion with a 4-yard run to make it 13-0 with 3:52 left in the first quarter.
Shaw temporarily replaced Burns with junior backup Keller Chryst, but Stanford's offense remained dormant and Washington tacked on an 18-yard field goal by Van Winkle to make it a 16-point margin with 8:52 left in the half.
Burns re-entered and the Cardinal again gave the ball back to the Huskies. Washington moved 70 yards on five plays, with Browning tossing an 18-yard scoring pass to Ross to make it 23-0 with 3:46 to play.
The Huskies outgained Stanford 225-83 in the first 30 minutes.
