Jeff Fleming hit Brandyn Reed on a 6-yard touchdown pass in overtime and the two connected again on the ensuing two-point conversion pass as Sacramento State stunned host Oregon State 29-28 on Saturday.
Malcolm Agnew rushed for a 17-yard touchdown on Oregon Stateกฏs first overtime possession and the Hornets decided to go for the victory after countering the Beaversกฏ touchdown. Reed ran a fade route and hauled in Flemingกฏs lofting two-point aerial to give Sacramento State a major victory.
The Hornets, ranked 24th in the Football Championship Subdivision, had lost their last three games against Pac-12 teams by a combined 133-27. Sacramento State lost to Stanford 52-17 last season.
This time, Sacramento State prevailed despite squandering a 15-point fourth-quarter lead. Agnew, who rushed for 223 yards on 33 carries, scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards as Oregon State rallied from a 21-6 deficit. A two-point pass from backup quarterback Sean Mannion to Markus Wheaton tied the contest with 8:08 left.
Oregon State had a chance to win the contest in regulation but freshman Trevor Romaine hit the right upright from 27 yards out with no time remaining.
The Hornets outplayed Oregon State for most of the contest. Fleming threw second-quarter touchdown passes of 19 and 4 yards to Chase Deadder en route to a 14-3 halftime lead. Overall, Fleming passed for 257 yards and three scores.
Sacramento State boosted the lead to 21-6 on a well-executed double pass in which Morris Norrise caught Flemingกฏs backwards pass and hit Reed for a 39-yard touchdown.
Oregon State quarterback Ryan Katz didnกฏt play in the second half after going just 11-for-22 for 87 yards with one interception in the first 30 minutes.
