It’s a getaway day in the MLB with three matinee games on the schedule, which means there are props for us to dive into all day long!
We start by looking at a player prop for one of our favorite inning-eaters in the Philadelphia Phillies’ Zack Wheeler and wonder if the San Francisco Giants still be undervalued if they win the World Series? Either way, there is value with them today.
We break down and pick these games and more with our best free MLB prop bets and predictions for Wednesday, September 22.
Today’s MLB props and picks
Zack Wheeler Over 19.5 Outs Recorded (best odds: -115 at BetMGM)
The Philadelphia Phillies haven't been able to keep up their hot play from August and are quickly falling out of the National League wild-card race. The Phillies now trail the red-hot St. Louis Cardinals by 4.5 games. If they want any shot at the postseason, they need to start a winning streak tonight against the Baltimore Orioles, and they’ll hand the ball to the right guy in Zack Wheeler.
Wheeler has had a terrific season for the Phillies pitching to a 2.83 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, but on top of that, he has been one of the most reliable arms in the big leagues this season. Wheeler leads the majors in innings pitched, already logging 200 1-3 innings.
The right-hander has also pitched well in September, owning a 1.02 ERA, and is holding opponents to a .212 batting average. Now, he goes against an O’s team that ranks 28th in batting average and 26th in OPS when it comes to facing right-handed pitching this season.
While Wheeler has only gone Over this number once in his last four starts, he has recorded 20 or more outs 18 times in his 30 starts, and the matchup against the O’s means he should be able to work deep into this game once again.
Dodgers-Rockies Under 5.5 Five-Inning Total (best odds: -108 at FanDuel)
It’s the latest edition of our Rocky Mountain Low!
Yes, the Colorado Rockies send their ace, German Marquez, to the mound for Wednesday night’s matchup against Walker Buehler and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers.
Marquez has had a bit rough go of it in the second half of the season, but he is still the Rockies' best starter and his numbers at home have still been excellent, which is impressive considering it's Coors Field. The right-hander has 3.16 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in 16 starts at home this season.
Meanwhile, Buehler is quietly having one of the best seasons in the National League. The right-hander is pitching to a 2.39 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, and is limiting opponents to a .197 batting average. In two starts against the Rockies this season, Buehler has allowed just four runs on eight hits over 13 innings of work.
Bet on this one to be low-scoring early.
Giants Over 2.5 Five-Inning Team Total (best odds: +100 at DraftKings)
It looks like we will be undervaluing the San Francisco Giants all the way to the postseason. They are slight underdogs against a San Diego Padres team that has lost four in a row and is quickly falling out of the NL Wild Card race.
The Padres are searching for answers as their season slips away, particularly in the starting staff. This is evidenced by them picking up the released Vince Velasquez and immediately throwing him into their rotation. But the right-hander was released for a reason.
Velasquez has pitched to a 6.09 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP this season and his first start for the Padres didn’t look any different. He allowed four runs on four hits, which included two dingers, in an eventual 8-2 loss to the Cardinals.
Now, he faces a Giants lineup that is one of the deepest in the majors. San Francisco ranks third in the MLB in home runs per game, fourth in OPS, and sixth in batting average. Bet on them to get off to a good start in this one and go Over their five-inning team total.
