Giants vs Padres betting preview
Starting pitchers
Scott Kazmir (0-1, 6.43 ERA): Kazmir has thrown only seven total innings in the big leagues this year, and he gave up five runs, eight hits and three homers across those three appearances. In the minors, Kazmir is 3-3 with a 4.61 ERA for Sacramento in AAA ball. The southpaw’s best days are behind him, but the Giants need somebody to give them some innings tonight. It’s unlikely that Kazmir will throw more than four or five here.
Vincent Velazquez(3-7, 6.09 ERA): Velasquez was with the Phillies for most of the season, but he recently signed a minor league deal with the Padres. In his first game with the team, the righty gave up four earned runs in four innings in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on September 17. San Diego will be hoping that he can work a bit deeper into this game, but the team likely isn’t expecting all that much.

Moneyline pick
The starting pitching matchup in this game is the exact opposite of last night’s meeting between Kevin Gausman and Joe Musgrove. While those two starters have been as reliable as they come for their teams this season, neither of these clubs will be expecting all that much from tonight’s pitchers. Having said that, the Giants have to feel like they have a significant edge here.
Kazmir hasn’t pitched much this season — and there’s no doubt that his best days are far behind him — but he does get to face a San Diego team that has been miserable against lefties this year. Only the Pittsburgh Pirates have hit fewer home runs against southpaws this season, with the Padres having just 35 on the year. Also, only four teams have a lower slugging percentage against lefties this year, and San Diego is also third-to-last in ISO against them.
At the same time, the Giants have been unbelievable against right-handed pitching all season long, and they now get a crack at one that has been miserable in 2021. Velasquez has allowed 15 runs over his last 8.1 innings on the mound, and he gave up four runs in just four innings in a loss to the Giants back on June 18. The Giants are in the Top 5 in slugging percentage, ISO and homers when facing righties this year. They’re also seventh in the league in RBIs against right-handed pitching. This team has crushed righties all year long, and there’s little doubt they’ll do the same against one that hasn’t had a productive season since 2016.
Overall, both of these teams should get their licks in, but the Giants are the far more dangerous side here.
PREDICTION: Giants ML (-112)
Over/Under pick
The last time Kazmir started a game for the Giants was on June 4. The lefty pitched just two innings in that game and the final score ended up being 8-5, easily going Over the total. Meanwhile, four of Velasquez’s last six outings have gone Over the total, with all four of those contests seeing at least 10 runs on the scoreboard.
There’s just very little to suggest that either of these guys is capable of going out and being anything better than mediocre. The Over is 4-1 in San Francisco’s last five games against a right-handed starter, and it’s also 5-1 in San Diego’s last six games overall.
PREDICTION: Over 9.5 (+100)
