CHICAGO กช Robbie Gould's third field goal of the game, a 49-yarder with two seconds remaining, lifted the Chicago Bears to a 22-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders in a back-and-forth, error-filled game Sunday.
Quarterback Jay Cutler, returning after missing one game due to a hamstring injury, led a magnificent late drive with the help of receivers making nifty catches on the sideline. He completed five of eight passes on the winning drive and 28 of 43 for 281 yards overall.
Cutler also lost a fumble on a snap and threw an interception, leading directly to 10 of Oakland's points. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr threw two touchdown passes but also an interception that set up one of Gould's field goals.
The winning drive began after Sebastian Janikowski put the Raiders ahead, 20-19, on a 41-yard field goal with 2:05 remaining.
It began inauspiciously, with a sack and an incompletion, but Cutler threw a fourth down completion into tight coverage to tight end Martellus Bennett -- who caught 11 passes in the game -- to keep the drive alive.
A third down, 7-yard completion to Marquess Wilson earned another first down and back to back throws to Eddie Royal for 12 yards and Wilson for nine, both of them fingertip grabs, set up the field goal.
The game featured six lead changes, but the Bears' ability to keep drives going on third downs was a major difference. They converted 10 of 17 third downs into first downs, after making only 16 of 42 in three previous games.
In the first half, the Raiders built a 14-6 lead before Chicago struck for 10 points in the closing minutes of the half.
Nearly half the yardage on an 80-yard touchdown drive came when running back Matt Forte took a pass from Cutler, evaded an attempt at a tackle downfield, and ran for a 38-yard gain to the Bears' 29-yard line. Three plays later, Cutler connected with Bennett for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
On the first play after the kickoff, Carr threw a pass right into the hands of running back Lativius Murray, but Murray failed to catch it and instead deflected it right to linebacker Pernell McPhee. Murray dropped another pass later, lost a fumble and was benched.
It took a good play at the goal line for the Raiders to prevent another touchdown but a 19-yard field goal by Robbie Gould put the Bears into the halftime lead.
Chicago scored first, driving 80 yards from the opening kickoff, mostly on two big pass plays กช Cutler to Bennett for 24 yards and Cutler to Marquess Wilson for 35 กช with the touchdown coming on a 7-yard, third down pass from Cutler to Royal. But the extra point kick was blocked
A perfectly thrown, 26-yard throw from Carr to rookie wide receiver Amari Cooper produced Oakland's first touchdown and, after a fumbled snap by Chicago turned the ball over, Carr threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Roy Helu, Jr.
NOTES: QB Jay Cutler returned to the lineup after missing one game but the Bears played without three injured regulars including No. 1 wideout Alshon Jeffery. LG Matt Slauson moved to center and Patrick Omameh went in at left guard. กญ Oakland WR Michael Crabtree left the game with an ankle injury in the second quarter but returned. กญ Bears FS Antrell Rolle was injured (ankle) on the first play of the third quarter and did not return.
