No. 4 Stanford 34, San Jose State 13: Kevin Hogan threw for two touchdowns and Tyler Gaffney rushed for 104 yards and two scores as the Cardinal pulled away in the second half against the visiting Spartans.
Hogan was 17-of-27 for 207 yards for Stanford (1-0), which won its sixth straight season opener. Jordan Williamsonกฏs 48-yard field goal gave the Cardinal a 20-6 lead early in the third quarter, and Hogan connected with Ty Montgomery on a 17-yard touchdown pass five minutes later to help Stanford draw clear.
David Fales completed 29-of-43 passes for 216 yards, and his 13-yard touchdown to Noel Grigsby with 2:10 left in the third quarter helped San Jose State (1-1) cut the deficit to 27-13. The Spartans' upset bid was dashed on their following drive, when Fales was intercepted by Ed Reynolds and Stanford capitalized with Gaffneyกฏs 2-yard touchdown run.
Hogan improved to 6-0 as a starter and opened the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Devon Cajuste on Stanfordกฏs first possession. Montgomery had four receptions for 81 yards for Stanford, which held San Jose State to 35 rushing yards and snapped the Spartansกฏ eight-game winning streak.
San Jose State, which lost 20-17 to Stanford last season, went 3-for-12 on third-down conversions and were outscored 27-10 after the first quarter. Stanford used a balanced attack to finish with 404 total yards in their sixth straight victory over the Spartans.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Stanford forced a turnover in its 25th straight game, the longest active streak in the FBS. กญ The Cardinal improved to 14-0 against teams from the state of California over the last three-plus seasons. กญ Jason Simpson had 11 carries for 43 yards for San Jose State, which has a bye week before visiting Minnesota on Sept. 21.
