Wake Forest 28, North Carolina 27: Tanner Price capped an 11-play, 93-yard drive with a 1-yard sneak and Wake Forest picked off a Bryn Renner pass on visiting North Carolina's ensuing drive to win its ACC opener.
The Tar Heels (1-1, 0-1 ACC) shut out the Demon Deacons for most of the second half, but they couldn't stop Price late. He completed five of seven passes on the final scoring drive and finished 27-for-38 for 327 yards. Michael Campanaro had a huge game for the Demon Deacons (1-1, 1-0), catching 13 passes for 164 yards.
North Carolina's A.J. Blue had 106 rushing yards and a touchdown for the first 100-yard game of his career, and Casey Barth booted a pair of second-half field goals to become the Tar Heels' all-time leader.
Tar Heels coach Larry Fedora's no-huddle spread offense took a little longer to get going than it did in a season-opening romp over Elon. Without starting running back Giovani Bernard (knee), North Carolina struggled to establish the run early but picked it up in the second half.
The Tar Heels seemingly took control when they scored on three consecutive possessions in the third and fourth quarters. Price made a crucial mistake deep in his own territory, giving North Carolina the ball at the Wake Forest 8 after Tim Scott's interception. The turnover led to a 25-yard field goal from Barth for a 24-21 lead.
Barth added a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give him 55 field goals for his career, passing his brother, Connor, as the school's all-time leader and making it 27-21.
Renner took a hard hit near the goal line in the second quarter and had to come out of the game after being tended to on the field. He missed only one offensive play, though, as Blue punched in a 1-yard touchdown run on the next play. Renner returned for the next series and lost a fumble that set up Josh Harris' 6-yard scoring run for a 21-14 Wake Forest lead at halftime.
