Roughriders 36, Stampeders 21: Running back Kory Sheets rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown as Saskatchewan gained a measure of revenge on Calgary in its home opener.
Quarterback Darian Durant finished 26-for-34 for 258 passing yards and connected with slotbacks Weston Dressler and Chris Getzlaf for touchdowns as the Roughriders (2-0) came from behind to defeat the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year. Dressler finished with 108 receiving yards, while Getzlaf had 97.
Quarterback Drew Tate completed 19-of-25 passes for 231 yards but did not finish the game because of an injury to his throwing arm. Wide receiver Joe West caught one touchdown and had a team-leading 97 receiving yards for the Stampeders (1-1), while running back Jon Cornish was limited to 42 yards on eight carries.
Tate got off to a hot start with 138 passing yards in the first quarter -
including a 64-yard toss to West - to help the Stampeders build a 21-14
halftime lead. Roughriders kicker Chris Milo hit field goals from 38
and 29 yards in the third quarter to bring Saskatchewan within one
heading into the fourth.
Calgary defensive back Jonathan Hefney was called for pass interference early in the fourth quarter, setting up a first-and-goal that Sheets converted on the next play with a 3-yard run to put Saskatchewan ahead for good 26-21. Penalties continued to be a problem for the Stampeders, who took two costly ones on the drive that resulted in Getzlafกฏs score.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Veteran QB Kevin Glenn replaced the injured Tate in the fourth quarter and completed 4-of-7 passes for 41 yards, and threw an interception on the final play of the game. กญ Roughriders SB Geroy Simon missed his second game because of injury. The CFLกฏs career receiving yards leader has yet to make his debut with Saskatchewan. กญ Stampeders DE Shawn Lemon led all defenders with nine tackles and added one sack.
