New York Mets vs Kansas City Royals Match Player Stats On Aug 16, 2019

Mike Montgomery and four relievers limited the New York Mets to just one run as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Mets 4-1 Friday night in Kansas City. Ian Kennedy loaded the bases in the ninth but escaped with his 21st save in 24 chances.

Montgomery (3-5) had his second straight solid outing. After seven scoreless innings in Detroit in his last outing, Montgomery allowed one run on five hits in six innings, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Noah Syndergaard (8-6) took the loss for the Mets. Syndergaard, who had pitched at least seven innings in six straight starts, saw that streak snapped. He allowed two runs on five hits through six innings. He walked two and struck out six.

The Royals, who averaged 5.4 runs per game on their most recent road trip, struggled early. After being shut out in consecutive games by the St. Louis Cardinals, they did not score in the first four innings against Syndergaard, stretching the streak of futility to 22 innings.

Montgomery faced traffic in each of the first three innings. After squandering opportunities in the first two innings, the Mets finally converted in the third. Michael Conforto singled in J.D. Davis, but Todd Frazier rolled into a double play to end the threat with just one run.

The Royals finally got two runs off Syndergaard in the fifth with hits from their 7-8-9 hitters. Ryan O'Hearn singled through the shift. He then scored on a double down the right field line by Meibrys Viloria. The throw appeared to beat O'Hearn at the plate, but catcher Tomas Nido missed the ball. Nicky Lopez then lined one just inside the left field line, scoring Viloria.

The Royals added two runs in the eighth off Brad Brach, who allowed two hits and a walk to the three batters he faced. Brett Phillips, who was called up from Triple-A Omaha on Friday, then coaxed a bases-loaded walk from Edwin Diaz. Bubba Starling followed with an RBI single.
