Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani homered, Griffin Canning threw seven scoreless innings and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif.
Trout's 10th homer of the season was estimated at 473 feet and was the 250th of his career. He joined Alex Rodriguez, Jimmie Foxx, Ken Griffey Jr., Mickey Mantle and Juan Gonzalez as one of just 13 players overall (and sixth American League player) to hit 250 home runs before turning 28.
The home run also gave the Angels a 1-0 first-inning lead. Jonathan Lucroy added an RBI single in the second inning to make it 2-0, and Canning took it from there.
Making his fourth major league start since being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on April 30, Canning gave up just three hits and one walk while striking out five. He retired the first 12 batters he faced, not allowing a baserunner until Alex Gordon led off the fifth with a walk.
Kansas City got its first hit when Hunter Dozier followed Gordon's walk with a single. Canning, though, worked his way out of the jam, then followed it up with scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh.
Canning (2-1) was finished after seven at 93 pitches.
The Angels increased their lead with three runs in the sixth, the first two coming on a homer by Ohtani, his second of the season. Kole Calhoun added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-0.
All five of the runs (four earned) came off Royals starter Jakob Junis (3-5), who gave up six hits and two walks. He struck out six.
The Royals crept back into the game with Canning in the dugout, scoring three runs in the eighth off Angels reliever Taylor Cole. Royals designated hitter Whit Merrifield, who doubled off Canning in the sixth, had a two-run double off Cole to score the Royals' first runs of the game.
An RBI single by Adalberto Mondesi narrowed Kansas City's deficit to 5-3, but Lucroy's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth increased the Angels' lead to 6-3.
Ty Buttrey pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to close it out for his second save of the season.
