You won't know the outcomes of games from the future, but if you could go back in time before you made that first bet, or that first gamble would you still do it?
For me, the answer is No. I am 27, no kids, no wife.. with not much in my bank account and a crappy car collecting unemployment. I could only imagine how much worst it would be if I had other people to take care of, or would it make me more responsible?! I doubt it. I have had the gambling bug in my genes, my family would pitch quarters or play poker at every family get together. My dad and grandpa would bet horses, make trips to Vegas.
I inherited 5,000 at 18 and started betting through a bookie through my Uncle. I remember I lost like 700 or 800 the first 2 weeks which made me pretty sick. I had a $ 100 parlay going to get it all back.. All I needed was Denver to beat the Raiders by a touchdown. It was 2004, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ6-Xld4d68.. it was snowing in Denver and the Raiders had been horrible as usual. Well, Porter and Collins kicked my ass and I lost again. I blew half of the money and got a car with the other half..
I was playing poker at the casino 10 minutes away since 18 or 19, even hit a jackpot for 1400 and got paid half of it with a promise to bring social security/id on return. I never went back for a year or so..Tooken many bad beats through my years there and hate the place now. One time I played poker for hours breaking even, wasn't satisfied with that.. So I pissed away my whole check of $700 in 5 minutes at blackjack as I played the martingale system walking out the door. What a feeling that is as you walk out to the car and tell your buddy who just walked out with you as you guys were grinding for hours what you just did...
I have been betting offshore since 2007, I have withdrawn 4 times or so and deposited over 150 times I am sure. Mostly 20-50 deposits and some $200. But , I keep telling myself I can pick winners... What a blind and ignorant fool I must be right? I'm hooked.
I can no longer enjoy a sporting event without thoughts of how easy of an under/over it would be.. or I knew this team would win. I have lost a job because I was adding hours to my timesheet to get more money to gamble. I was so dumb I would turn my 36 hour week into 60 a few times.. of course payroll eventually noticed and I got fired. One of my biggest regrets and I cannot figure out what I was thinking, now I collect unemployment and wish I had a job. My car has taken a dump on me because it is a lemon.
If you are still reading hopefully you aren't too judgemental and can have some helpful words for me..I am feeling down and out and just need to vent somehow some way.
I deposited 30 $ last week, and quickly turned it into 600 . I requested a withdrawal for $385 Saturday night. I then bet and won a few games Sunday.

Nice Post - I would def not gamble, I have learned that only about 2-3 percent out there really win money gambling. In the long run- we all lose or go broke....

I decided to put the whole $300 on the Cowboys + 3.5 Sunday night. Of course I couldn't believe they converted the 2 point conversion, and was drinking watching the game at a friends house. They then get a sack, unbelievable to push em out of fg range!
Romo has the ball with 3 minutes left down 3, just anything but a int I say out loud.. and of course he throws the lamest pass for his 3rd interception. The lamest of them all .. I couldn't believe it. I was busto .. but had 70 $ from cowboys/under 1st half I decide to throw it on some tennis match that night because I couldn't handle the loss and was drinking. I lost it.
I then cancel my withdrawal and bet $240 on the Cincinnatti Bearcats +3.5 first half for some reason this morning.. they go scoreless the last 3 minutes of the half and had a ugly turnover and missed ft's from the 26-26 tie game mark to end the half 32-26. Of course they look like a whole new team in the second half and beat the crap out of Pitt smothering them..
I went back and forth on my last wager.. was thinking Georgia Tech and under .. parlay. Instead I choose Michigan St and the over parlay em for 140 to win 360 bought it up to 7 and over 129.
MSU is down 37-25 in first half with 4 or 5 minutes to go, they end the first half on a 3 to end the first half down 1, 38-39.
In the second half they were up 59-54 with 8 minutes left to play. They then proceed to turn the ball over, get frustrated and score 4 points the final 8 minutes of the game.. I sat here shocked yet not surprised as Minnesota ends the game on a 20-4 run to win by double digits.
So my last 3 wagers I felt were all good wagers , but had some bad choke artists factoring into play. Yes, I know my money management is horrible. I realize this. I don't get it, when I only have a couple hundred bucks and deposit 20-30 that is a huge bet for me. Then I build my roll and I am betting more and more.. and if I bet less feel like I am losing money.
I think about betting on sports every day, it is a consuming thing. I really think I need to just quit as I have gone busto again when I should be waiting for a check that I really need.

Such a kick in the behind when your bet covers the opposite half/full game of your bet. Especially when you really need it.. MSU scoring 4 points in 8 minutes when I had a healthy + 7. I wanted Izzo to call a timeout and get his squad together and draw up a good play, but he just let them struggle and get flustered till they were down 5 with 2 minutes left and I felt my doom coming once again.

I know it is not healthy for me, but I love the thrill of the potential win and enjoying the games. Right now I am just so sick of it all, wanting to go back and make all those smart winning wagers I should have. I need to figure out how to move on, let go of the past plays and improve. I have not improved, I have gotten worst.

Coming up on a new year and trying to be hopeful to change for the better and learn something from this. I would not gamble if I could go back in time and start over, but do I have the power to stop now or to somehow manage my money and learn from this? Learn not to gamble what I cannot afford to lose?? I don't know fellas, I don't know.. feeling kinda hopeless at this moment.

Poker makes me sick, playing tight with Aces to get cracked by some drunk donkey calling you down with a 9-3 offsuit with a 3 on the flop and 9 on the river.
But you are right, I think I am like an alchoholic.
If I make 1 bet, I can't just make 1 bet... I'm going to keep betting for the rest of my life till I don't have a dollar to bet. I want to make money, I want to enjoy the games.. but I find my bets are bigger then what I can afford to lose once I win some. Then a couple of mooses and I throw all rational out the window! Very bad.

All depends on how you look at it. Majority of people bet on sports for the thrill/excitement in life. Sure you can work and grind paychecks for the rest of your life but what is the fun in that? People want to try and win extra money by betting on something they love to watch which is sports. I don't regret betting ever, just regret some of the bad cases of lack of money management.

I wouldn't normally reply to something like this, but you sound very depressed. Although I don't know you or what your made out of, unfortunately I know from experience that people do really stupid garbage on nights like this. It's amateur night out there as far as I'm concerned and I'm not going anywhere so I will give you a few minutes while I'm on this site. I am working right now as I have been since 7 o'clock this morning. It is now almost 11 at night. You see, I gamble on sports for my living. with a little poker and craps mixed in once in awhile. I am by no means rich at all, but I pay my bills, have a bit of fun here and there and put some away on a consistent basis for the future. I live in Las Vegas and see people like you every day of my life. Lots and lots of them. I can spot them immediately, because I used to be the same way. I have been gambling on sports for well over 20 yrs and have only been winning consistently for the last few years. I have blocked out what I lost before that, because the amount is so absurd. The difference now is that I worked very hard to LEARN what I am doing. Again, and I stress, the word LEARN. Somebody was nice enough to sit me down and explain that I had to LEARN the things I know now, so I will pay it forward. It's up to you to pay attention or not. I am not a complete professional 'Sharp'. In fact still a ways from it, but I am also no longer a 'Square'. If your not willing to put in hard work, a lot of hard work, to learn what you are doing, just give it up. Throw in the towel right now, because you will never win on a consistent basis. Sell the addiction garbage to someone else, because I'm not buying. ( no paragraph's to save space). The lines that the books put out can be beat, but you have to know what they mean, how they move and most importantly why. I'm not here to try to teach you anything about the craft of it, just to try to tell you if you want to do it, you have to learn what your doing or you will lose in the long run forever. That's the bottom line and it is absolute. You have to know about the teams you are betting on, or against and just as important, the sport itself. Football, basketball, hockey or tennis for Christ's sake. I would never bet on a tennis game, because I know absolutely nothing about it.(unless someone I know who's opinion I highly regard gave me a tip). It takes time and patience and serious work, literally yr's of it, to LEARN how to do it. Would you want a doctor working on you who was basically guessing how to remove a kidney. Think about that. There are plenty of websites, books, etc to read and LEARN. You have to figure it all out for yourself. If your not at least relatively a smart guy, just forget about it. I will leave you with this, the first thing I was told to do. Get the lines on all the games in every sport everyday. They give out sheets here, but write em' down if you have to. Compare the final lines everyday to the posted lines. Everyday !! Consistently !! There is a pattern there on which lines hit at higher percentages. Lay off the parlay's until you can consistently hit straight bet's and even then make them only a small percentage of what you would straight bet. Finally, and most importantly, never bet more than 5 or 10% of your bankroll on any given game. If you feel so confident about a certain game, after you have researched it to death and your willing to bet a LIMB on it. 20 to 25% at the bottom line most. What you do is of course up to you, but I wouldn't have taken the time to write this if I didn't mean every word. Good luck to you and Happy New Year. Buck up !!
P.S. The answer to your original question is a resounding yes !!

Nice. Gambling your unemployment. Feel bad you've lost some, but you are betting such small numbers. In the grand scheme of things, you're down, what, like $15,000? You'll be fine. Just go out and get a job. Don't be reliant on the unemployment. You'll make more on the job market and be able to get a new car.

Cali - I just recently stopped betting. I knew I had a gambling problem after going to the casino multiple times and losing a couple hundred every time. It seriously just got the point where I couldnt even go to that place anymore without getting sick to my stomach. I won big on the 4th of July but went back probably a solid ten times since and lost every time. I am a good blackjack player but sometimes you cant control the outcome regardless if you are a good player or not.
I stayed away from NFL betting alI season until I found out through my boss about his buddy who was a bookie. I was hooked from Week 9 on. I started out small ($30-40 bets for fun) and won every single game I bet on the first week to get up to $700 off small wagers. I then tried to get cute and bet big and displayed horrible money management. Basically, I garbage away all the money on some games that I had no reason to put that much money on. $300 on Ohio U -3 vs. BGSU, $250 on a .5 pt miss on Atl-TB, $300 on a Thursday night football game I couldnt care less about normally Bills-Dolphins. Just garbage went completely wrong and I realized I had to back away. The bookie texted me and told me I owed $1330. I had a tad more of that in my bank account at the time.
I hated myself that I was trying to save money (student loans, girlfriend who wants a ring, food, rent, living expenses) but I was blowing it because Matt Bryant couldnt make a field goal or because a random MAC school didnt show up for a Thursday night football game.
I'm a natural born gambler as well. I have been playing poker with friends since the boom in 2005 and always wanted to be a high roller. I've realized now their is so much more to life that worrying about useless games. Sure, I may join a college football pick em or a fantasy league here or there, but I try to completely stay away from betting games. Just WAY too many fishy things happen. I firmly believe I watched some rigged games. When you have money on the games it makes you look at the games in a different light.
Stop feeling like you have to bet on everything to make a fortune. The worst thing you can do is bet 1H in the NFL or basketball. If you don't have money management you are toast in this business. My advice for you: Youre still young. I am 24 and just stopped betting last month and have no intention to go back. Get your act together, get a job, fix your car, take care of yourself. You aren't putting any time into yourself. You're making yourself feel awful about sports games. There is way more to life man.
Good luck

You need to either stop gambling altogether or figure out what you're doing wrong and correct it. Deposit $100 and use $1 units. Or deposit $1,000 and use $10 units. If you can't pick winners then stop trying. It's all about discipline and money management. If you're looking to get rich quickly you're doomed. Think long term. If you can increase your bankroll by 10-15% every month or nearly every month, you'll have a huge wad of cash in just 3-4 years.
Good luck dude.

1% of gamblers can do that. Everything that I have read on here(been a few years) there is only 1 person that I have seen that understands what it takes to do that and it is Vanzack. It has nothing to do with his capping ability,it has to do with betting style and shopping best lines and lowest juice. If you use only one book, you have no shot of ever being a winner.
