The 4-8 Chicago Bears are almost eliminated from the playoffs but have a new coach for today when they travel out west to take on the 5-7 San Francisco 49ers.
My Bears vs. 49ers predictions are calling for a closer game than what the spread projects due to a ton of crucial injuries for the Niners.
Find out why I am backing the Bears in my NFL picks for Sunday, December 8, and don't miss kickoff from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA at 4:25p.m. ET on FOX.
Bears vs 49ers prediction
Who will win Bears vs 49ers?
Two years ago, the Bears won at home 19-10 against the 49ers. San Francisco is a small favorite at -175 on the moneyline at home, and I think they probably will get the win, but not by much.
Caleb Williams has been looking much improved since the firing of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and now he will be without head coach Matt Eberflus. There was a lot of disfunction within the organization this year and I like the idea of seeing a free Williams out there with lots of weapons.
My best bet
Bears +3.5 (-115 at BetMGM)
My analysis
It has been a rough go for the Chicago Bears since starting 4-2 and dominating the Jacksonville Jaguars in London right before their bye week. They have lost six consecutive games, starting with a brutal loss to the Washington Commanders on a Hail Mary at the end of the game. The last three losses have been by three points or less, with major mistakes at the end of the game.
That led to Matt Eberflus's firing, which could be good for the Bears this week when they travel to San Francisco. Most of their issues have been around coaching decisions at the end of close games, and they clearly have the talent to compete with the best teams in the NFL.
The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with some major injuries as they will be without both Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason in the backfield. They are also without key pieces like tackle Trent Williams, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and defensive end Nick Bosa. The loss of Bosa and Greenlaw could be massive for a Bears offense that mostly struggles with pass protection.
On the other end of the field, the Bears are sixth best in the NFL in takeaways, while the 49ers are ranked 27th in giveaways. San Francisco ranks 24th in the league in points allowed despite being ranked fifth in yards allowed and turnovers are the main reason.
The Bears should be able to force Brock Purdy into some mistakes without having to worry too much about the run game with their top two rushers out for this contest. The 49ers' defense has been vulnerable allowing 38 and 35 points in each of the last two weeks. I like the Bears to keep this one close and at least cover the spread.
Bears vs 49ers same-game parlay
To go along with the Bears covering, I am going to throw in a couple of player props. To start we will look at a Bears offensive performer in Caleb Williams to run out of the pocket. Since the firing of Shane Waldron, Williams has run for 70, 33, and 39 yards in the past three games. He is playing freer and will find opportunities to break free against this 49ers banged-up defense.
Finally, I will add Deebo Samuel to do it all for the 49ers. Without CMC and Mason, the Niners will make sure they get plenty of opportunities for Deebo from out of the backfield as well as in the passing game. He had 3.8 carries per game in games without CMC this season and now they are also without backup Mason. He will be the main focal point of the offense.
