That loss was the Brewers’ fourth straight and now they have to face an improving Aaron Nola on Wednesday to try and snap the skid.

Starting pitchers

Aaron Nola (3-4, 3.92 ERA): Last season Nola, the former first-round pick, struggled on the road. This year has been a different story. The 29-year-old right-hander is pitching better away from Citizens Bank Park. While his ERA is 3.77 at home, it’s at 3.38 in five away starts. His last away game start was in Atlanta on May 26 and he limited the Braves to one run on five hits through 8 1-3 innings. 

Adrian Houser (3-5, 3.51 ERA): Houser is a dangerous pitcher to handicap. So far this season, he has been either brilliant or a train wreck. The 29-year-old righty has three games where he has allowed just one run and three others where he has yielded three or more. In his last start, he allowed one run on five hits to the San Diego Padres, but the start before that he got bombed, giving up five runs, including two homers, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Run line analysis

The Philadelphia Phillies were playing like the team that was projected to be a playoff contender, with a good mix of pitching and offense to make that happen. Then, the Phillies found themselves seven games below .500 and fired manager Joe Girardi last week. 

That seems to have lit a fire under the team. Philadelphia went out and swept the Angels over the weekend and seems to be playing with renewed purpose. 

On Monday, the Phillies were down a run in the ninth but came back to beat the Brewers, 3-1. It was their third come-from-behind win in six days. 

Philadelphia has the tools to get into the playoffs and now it’s looking like it’s ready to use them. The team is tied for eighth in home runs, and Bryce Harper, who has been the designated hitter while he heals from an elbow injury, has 13 dingers — second to Kyle Schwarber’s 14. 

Milwaukee is also just 1-5 in its last six as a home underdog.

Prediction: Phillies -1.5 (+135 at BetMGM)

Over/Under analysis

This is a game in which the Phillies could go Over the eight runs all by themselves. Milwaukee starter Adrian Houser has gotten torched a few times this season and most recently, he allowed five runs. 

Philadelphia is seventh in runs, as it is averaging 4.7 runs a game and have 10 games this season scoring eight runs or more. 

The Brewers can score as well, sitting ninth in runs. The trend is on the Over for both teams, with the Phillies 5-0 to the Over in their last five games and 5-0 in the last five in the second game of a series. 

The Brewers are 4-1 to the Over against a left-handed starter and 4-1 in their last five home games. 

The Over is 5-2 in the last seven games between the two teams and will move to 6-2 today. 

Prediction: Over 8 (-110 at Caesars)

Best bet

Adrian Houser is susceptible to getting tagged for runs. The righty, whose ERA is 3.51, has had four games in which he has given up three or more earned runs. In a game against the St. Louis Cardinals on May 28, Houser surrendered five earned runs on nine hits in four innings. 

That’s not the only time Houser has been roughed up. On May 11, against the lowly Cincinnati Reds, Houser allowed three runs on six hits. The start before that, which was also against the Reds, he allowed four earned runs on seven hits. 

Brewers manager Craig Counsell has shown he does not have a quick hook and has let Houser pitch when he was struggling. The quickest he has been pulled was April 11, and that had more to do with pitch count than performance. 

The Phillies have the weapons to get at least three earned runs against Milwaukee's righty tonight. They are one of the better offenses in the Majors and five Phils have 20 or more RBI (with two others currently at 19). 

If Houser goes at least four innings, I like his chances to give up at least three runs.
