The MGCB has not authorized esports betting at state-licensed casinos or Michigan sports betting sites. Currently, Little River Casino Resort — a tribal casino — is the only sportsbook reportedly offering to bet on esports.

What about college sports?

College athletics are fair game in Michigan. Bettors can freely place wagers on college football games, whether they support Michigan or Michigan State, and any other local collegiate sports and programs. 

What about the NFL Draft?

The always entertaining — and often intriguing — NFL Draft has turned into a significant betting event. You were legally able to bet on the 2024 NFL Draft in MI, but there were cut-off times to keep in mind. Betting for the first round, typically held on a Thursday night, ends at midnight on Wednesday.  Bets for the second and third rounds end Thursday night while wagering for rounds four through seven ends on Friday night.

After legalizing sports betting late in 2019, Michigan opened its first retail sportsbooks in March 2020. Today, Michiganders can wager with 11 mobile betting apps and visit more than 20 brick-and-mortar sportsbooks.

2024: Fanatics Sportsbook and Casino go live in the state.

2023: A sports betting partnership between Caesars Sportsbook and Michigan State University falls under scrutiny as staff and faculty urge the two parties to dissolve an $8.4 million deal. 

2022: Eagle Casino & Sports and SI Sportsbook go live in the Wolverine State. Michigan sportsbooks generate over $4.8 billion in sports betting handle in the year ending December 2022.

2021: Online sports betting officially arrives in Michigan, with DraftKings, FanDuel, and others launching online sports wagering platforms in the state in January. In its first year of legal online gambling, Michigan rakes in nearly $4 billion in sports bets.

2020: Greektown Casino-Hotel and MGM Grand Detroit accept Michigan's first legal sports bets. The two casinos launch retail sports betting facilities in March. The excitement is short-lived, however, as Michigan's casinos are forced to temporarily close at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. 

2019: On Dec. 20, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signs HB 4916 and HB 4308, among other bills, legalizing Michigan sports betting and daily fantasy sports contests. 

2018: The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) is struck down as the Supreme Court lifts the federal sports betting ban. Each state may now legalize and regulate online and retail sports wagering.
