James "Lights Out" Toney was 44-0 with 2 draws before he ran into Roy Jones Jr. Is he the second greatest professional boxer ever? The propaganda is a little taxing to me, sometimes. But, from reading your post, I believe your vitriol for Mayweather Jr. comes from...somewhere else. Forgive me if I misjudged.
I believe this will be a fight for the ages. This fight will be the greatest milestone in both fighter's legacy. I also don't believe there will be any "funny business" with this fight (although, as in ANY sport, be mindful of weary-minded referess/officials/judges). However, as 3BallBomber had agreed upon, having a perfect record for Mayweather Jr. alone...doesn't guarantee a future revenue stream of pay-per-view. As had been reported from various media sources, Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s opportunities outside of the ring are pretty limited. He *WILLINGLY* embarrassed himself on a morning radio show in a competition with rapper 50 cent that Floyd couldn't read a paragraph in 2 minutes, which the boxer failed to do. I was told his reading comprehension is pretty embarrassing. At the official press conference announcing the fight between Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao, I saw every major player, from both camps, walked to the podium to express their pleasure on being a part of this major event of the ages on May 2nd. Floyd Mayweather Sr. was expected to say something to the audience, but in an awkward move...he stayed seated and remained quiet. It would seem that move was to not embarass himself or his boxing camp with his speech impediment. His son seemed to not fare much better himself at the podium addressing the audience, in my humble opinion.
I said all that to imply that if boxing is your one-and-only surefire way of living (and he does excel in that field), and Father Time will come and take that from you sometime soon...why not make the most out of this opportunity, this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you have here, and make this a 3-match pay-per-view showdown? Dare I say...have the 3rd match (finale) become a "Thrilla in Manilla", in the vein of Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier's final match? The revenue stream would be utterly insane, both boxing reputations would truly skyrocket to epic proportions, and the sport *could* possibly find itself in a bit of a resurgence from it (although, I still believe a few "spectacular" cruiserweight or heavier is needed for that). Just makes sense all around. Again, if I'm talking from a degree of naiveness, I apologize.
Please excuse the rant, just a boxing fan giving his point of view...
I believe Mayweather is a disgrace to the sport of boxing. Every time he claims ¡°TBE¡± it¡¯s a slap in the face to all the legends like Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Sam Langford, Joe Gans, and Archie Moore. These men had over 568 knockouts combined and fought like men. Mayweather has only 26 knockouts and does as little as possible to squeak out with a weak decision and claims ¡°the best ever.¡±
The only thing he is the best at is making money. He is the best money making boxer ever. I'll give him that. What you are saying sounds logical but Mayweather doesn¡¯t care about risky opportunities. He looks for the easiest fight with the smallest amount of risk and the biggest payout possible. He only took this fight because of the unrelenting pressure. Good post sir.
