JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Houston Texans scored one touchdown on defense and set up another with a big play on special teams to give their offense an easy day during a 24-21 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at EverBank Field.
Houston came into the game winless in three tries on the road but got the quick start they talked about all week when cornerback Kareem Jackson intercepted Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles on the first drive of the game and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown.
That was the start of an opportunistic day for the Texans (6-3) and another frustrating outing for the Jaguars (2-7), who have lost four straight and now hits the road for two games.
The Jaguars trailed 24-13 late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Blake Bortles drove his team 92 yards over eight plays and connected with receiver Allen Robinson for a 14-yard touchdown. The two hooked up again on the two-point conversion to cut their deficit to a field goal with 2:25 remaining in the game.
Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler responded with his biggest play of the game, a 10-yard completion to receiver DeAndre Hopkins while facing third-and-5. The completion allowed the Texans to run out the clock.
Osweiler had struggled on the road during losses to New England, Minnesota and Denver this season but was solid Sunday. He tossed a touchdown apiece to tight ends Ryan Griffin and Stephen Anderson and finished 14-of-27 passing for 99 yards with zero turnovers.
The Jaguars haven't forced a turnover in the past four games.
Osweiler's second touchdown was set up by a long punt return by Tyler Ervin in the third quarter.
Ervin fielded the punt from his own territory and weaved down the left sideline before finally being stopped at the Jaguars' 7-yard line. Osweiler found Anderson wide open on the following play to give the Texans a 21-10 lead.
Nick Novak bounced back from two earlier misses to make a 51-yard field goal to give the Texans a 24-13 lead with 8:32 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Bortles was inconsistent again in front of a home crowd that has had little to cheer about this season.
His first interception came when he was late throwing toward receiver Allen Hurns on the sideline, and he had another pass improbably intercepted when he attempted to abort a screen pass to T.J. Yeldon and fired it off the running back's foot and into the hands of Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus.
He finished the game 32-of-49 passing for 265 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
NOTES: After rushing for a season-high 107 yards last week against Kansas City, Jaguars RB Chris Ivory ran nine times for 31 yards. T.J. Yeldon had 32 yards on nine carries. ... Jacksonville WR/KR Marqise Lee briefly left the game in the first half with what appeared to be a right ankle injury but returned and had another solid game with four catches for 50 yards. ... Jacksonville WR Allen Robinson had nine catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. ... Houston RB Lamar Miller left the game in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury and briefly returned. However, it was Akeem Hunt who did most of the damage in the second half and finished with 52 yards. Miller had 83 yards, most of which came on a 45-yard run in the first half. ... The Texans won on the road for the first time this season after starting 0-3. Three of the Texans' next four games are on the road.
