Gavin Patterson connected on a 30-yard field goal with six seconds to play and South Alabama knocked off Georgia State 13-10 on Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama.
Demarcus Kirk capped an 11-play, 71-yard drive with a short touchdown run that gave Georgia State a 10-3 lead late in the third quarter. Panthers wide receiver Robert Davis had a catch on the drive to extend his streak to 45 games with at least one reception.
Tyreis Thomas scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:11 to play to tie the score at10-10. South Alabama (4-4, 1-4 Sun Belt) converted a fourth-and-11 on the 14-play, 72-yard scoring drive.
South Alabama took advantage of an 18-yard punt from Georgia State's Brandon Wright that set up the Jaguars on the Panthers' 31-yard line will less than a minute to play. South Alabama ran five plays, milking time off the clock before Patterson booted the game-winning kick, his second field goal of the game.
Georgia State freshman quarterback Aaron Winchester made his second straight start in place of Conner Manning, who is battling an arm injury suffered two weeks ago in practice. Winchester completed 11 of 18 passes for 113 yards. He also rushed for 64 yards.
Georgia State (2-6, 1-3) forced two turnovers, including an interception from B.J. Clay.
