The Bruins rallied with 14 unanswered points in the third quarter with a pair of 1-yard runs to trim the deficit to 31-28, but Keenum answered with his second scoring pass, which came as a result of Cougarsกฏ offensive lineman Chris Thompson recovering a fumble by Carrier in the end zone for a 38-28 lead.
UCLA used a 15-play drive to move within field-goal range on the following drive, but kicker Kip Smith missed a 32-yard attempt. Backup quarterback Richard Brehaut led a desperation scoring drive when he hit Anthony Barr on an 11-yard pass with 1:19 remaining, but Smithกฏs extra-point attempt was blocked.
UCLA starting quarterback Kevin Prince, who missed the final six games of last season with a knee injury, left the game suffering from concussion symptoms after he was tackled by D.J. Hayden out of bounds in the second quarter. He was replaced by Brehaut and did not return.
With 340 total yards in this contest, Keenum moved past Ty Detmer and Colt Brennan into fifth place on the NCAA career total offense list with 14,788 total yards. He needs 3,177 passing yards to become the NCAAกฏs all-time leader.
