RBC Canadian Open picks and predictions
Tommy Fleetwood Top 20 (+100)
Tommy Fleetwood is returning to Canada a year removed from possibly his best shot at a PGA Tour win, ultimately losing in a playoff to a red-hot Nick Taylor.
The form has been solid lately, too, with three Top-15s and a T26 at Valhalla over his last five starts. Over the last six months, Fleetwood ranks fourth in this field in true strokes around-the-green and eighth from tee to green to rank fourth overall.
The watered-down field has him up to No. 2 in the outright odds but this +100 price for a Top 20 is one I’m happy to jump all over.
Pick: Tommy Fleetwood Top 20 (+100 at bet365)
Maverick McNealy Top 30 (-105)
Maverick McNealy stuttered after Top-10 finishes at the Phoenix Open and PLAYERS Championship earlier this season, but he got right back on track with three sub-70 rounds and a T23 finish at Valhalla — by far his major championship result.
He followed that up with a T17 finish at Colonial last week in which he shot a Sunday-best 66 to climb the board. He’s trending in the right direction and this week’s light field presents another golden opportunity to contend.
He’s eighth in this field in total strokes gained over the last three months and that includes being ninth from tee to green despite only ranking 56th on approach. Put it all together and you get a guy that ranks eighth in scoring average for the season.
He did miss the weekend here last year but that came during a run of five missed cuts in seven starts while he was wildly out of form. That’s simply not the case this time around.
Pick: Maverick McNealy Top 30 (-105 at bet365)
RBC Canadian Open field and favorites
It looked like the stars were aligning for Rory McIlroy (+350) in the lead-up to the PGA Championship at Valhalla; he had won the 2014 edition at that venue and entered in stellar form after winning back-to-back starts at the Zurich Classic and Wells Fargo.
It was not to be, however, finishing T12 for the week thanks to a quiet second-round 71 that kept him out of true contention. Either way, the form that saw him dominate at Quail Hollow couldn't have gone far and his weeks in Canada have been particularly friendly to him with two victories (2019, 2022) and a T9 (2023) in three career tries.
Tommy Fleetwood is second on the board at +1,600 and continues to play consistent golf. He came oh-so-close to his first PGA Tour win here last season, losing to Nick Taylor in a playoff after going 64-67 on the weekend. He also finished T6 here in 2018.
Running third this week is Sahith Theegala at 20/1, who really impressed at the PGA Championship. He was just one shot back through 54 holes but teetered off on Sunday to finish T12. He also recently finished runner-up at the RBC Heritage but hasn't been great here in Canada, with T38 and T53 results in two career tries.
Shane Lowry is next in the +1,800 to +2,200 range and while he continues to be up and down, he did win the Zurich Classic with Rory and finished T6 at Valhalla two weeks ago thanks to a red-hot putter. Corey Conners rounds out the Top 5; the Canadian finished T20 here last season and sixth in 2022.
Defending champion and fellow Canadian Nick Taylor is on the board between +5,000 and +6,000.
