We’ve got a big-time Eastern Conference showdown tonight with the New Jersey Devils hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Prudential Center.
Auston Matthews has just eight goals on the season, but a matchup against the Devils tonight is exactly what Toronto's captain — and our Maple Leafs vs. Devils predictions — needs to get his season back on track.

My Leafs analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs look to end a two-game losing streak tonight and they’ll be asking for a bit more offense from their captain to make it happen.
Luckily for the Buds, Auston Matthews has been a thorn in the side of the New Jersey Devils throughout his entire career with 18 goals in 19 meetings, scoring in eight of the last 11 in this matchup.
Matthews spoke to the media at practice on Monday and talked about feeling healthier by the day. At full strength, one would have to think Matthews will start to fill the net at a rate closer to his 16% career shooting average than his current 10% mark in 2024-25. So the goals should be coming, especially since he continues to get quality opportunities this season.
The Maple Leafs captain ranks 2nd in the NHL in individual expected goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5, per Natural Stat Trick. A big reason for this is the 5.53 individual high-danger chances he gets per 60 minutes. That should bode well against a Devils team that has surrendered the seventh most Grade-A goals this season (30) and ranks 23rd in HDSV%.
Additionally, Matthews could make some noise on the power play tonight. New Jersey's penalty kill is operating at just a lowly 64% over the last five games and has been the fourth-most penalized team during that stretch.
Moreover, the Leafs have fared pretty well against the Devils’ projected starter in the past. Jacob Markstrom is 5-9-1 with a 2.99 GAA and a .900 SV%. Matthews has scored on him a team-high seven times throughout his career, with 15% shooting.
Maple Leafs vs Devils same-game parlay (SGP)
The second leg of our SGP will focus on Matthews’ shot prop as we’ll take him to record 3+ shots on net tonight. He’s cashed in on this in six of his last seven meetings against New Jersey and has recorded 3+ shots in 72% of his games this season.
For the final leg, we’ll take Jack Hughes to also get 3+ shots on goal tonight. He’s done this in six of his last seven games and is averaging 3.53 shots per game this season.
