My Leafs analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs have the Washington Capitals' number with nine wins in the last 10 meetings between the two clubs. A big reason for the Buds’ success has been their offensive surge against the Caps, outscoring them 45-25 in that 10-game stretch.
Auston Matthews has played in eight of those 10 games and has a point in each of the last seven, totaling five goals and 10 assists. He’s also scored a goal in four of the last five meetings.
I’m backing the Maple Leafs captain to score again tonight.
Matthews is heating up with five points in the three games since his return to the lineup. He’s now scored in back-to-back games, including a two-goal outing Wednesday night against Nashville — his first multi-goal night of the season. Auston Matthews typically scores in bunches, and I think he’s in the midst of one of those heaters right now.
Last season, Matthews had seven different three-game goal streaks, with the longest run stretching across eight consecutive games. His 11% shooting is still quite a far cry from his usual 16% shooting average, so he’s bound to go on a bender at some point.
As for the goaltending matchup, the Caps' netminders have shown some chinks in the armor over the last few games. They’ve given up 4+ goals in three of their last four outings. Both goalies, Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren, have performed above expectations, and this could be the correction coming to fruition.
Considering the Maple Leafs are averaging 4.5 goals per game over the last 10 meetings against Washington, the Leafs should feel confident tonight, especially since they netted four goals just a couple of weeks ago on the road against the Caps in the team’s 4-3 win.
Maple Leafs vs Capitals same-game parlay (SGP)
For the first leg of our SGP, we’ll roll with our best bet and take Matthews to score an anytime goal tonight against Washington.
As the second leg of the parlay, we’ll keep with the Matthews theme and bet on him to get 4+ shots on goal. He had seven in his last game and looks to be reunited with Mitch Marner. Matthews is far more trigger-happy this season with Marner on his wing than any other forward.
Additionally, Matthews had 10 shots in the last meeting against Washington and had 4+ shots in four of the last five meetings.
Finally, let’s take a John Tavares shot prop and bet on him to register 2+ shots tonight. He’s hit this mark in five of his last six games and is averaging 3.2 shots per game this season.
