The Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars are set to square off Sunday night in a battle between two of the league’s best goal-prevention teams.
My Flames vs. Stars predictions see each side leaning into their defense-first style and playing a tight, low-scoring affair.
Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for December 8.

My Flames analysis
The Calgary Flames have surprised a lot of people this season with their ability to give opponents fits and grind out victories.
Their path to two points any given night is relying on team structure and goaltending while picking their spots offensively. It’s hard to argue with the results.
After a 4-3 loss at the hands of the St. Louis Blues, the Flames are expected to turn back to youngster Dustin Wolf between the pipes.
Wolf has played incredibly well this year, owning an 8-4-1 record and a sparkling .918 save percentage through 13 starts. He has saved 5.1 goals more than expected and ranks 9th among 48 eligible goaltenders in GSAx per game.
He’s really hit another level and should give a quality Stars team a difficult time when it comes to scoring goals.
On the flip side, the Dallas Stars have done a masterful job at keeping the puck out of the net — particularly at home. They have allowed 1.99 goals per 60 minutes in Dallas, a mark bested only by the Los Angeles Kings.
They have played well in their own zone while Jake Oettinger has proven the ability to mask mistakes whenever necessary.
Given each team’s style, and the caliber of goaltending, it should be no surprise both teams have played in a ton of low-scoring games.
Calgary’s record on Overs is 10-17 while the Stars come in at 9-13-4. I expect that trend to continue in this one.
Flames vs Stars same-game parlay (SGP)
A lot of offensive players tend to see their numbers dip when playing on the road and facing the most difficult matchups. That hasn’t been the case with Yegor Sharangovich.
He has actually generated shots at a much higher rate on the road, averaging 3.3 shots on goal per game compared to 2.4 in Calgary.
Yegor Sharangovich has cleared 2.5 shots in six of his last 10 road games and recorded multiple shots in every single one of them. He is a legitimate threat to get the job done each time out.
Sharangovich played the Stars in Dallas once last season and recorded five shots on eight attempts.
Taking the Flames on an alternate spread correlates nicely with the total. If it’s to be a low-scoring game, it’ll be difficult for the Stars to gain much separation on the scoreboard.
