Ryder Cup format
The Ryder Cup is a match-play event played over three days of competition. Each of the first two days of the competition features one four-match session of fourball and one four-match session of foursomes, while the final day has 12 singles matches.
In fourball, each member of a two-man team plays his own ball, so four balls are in play on every hole. The team whose player has the lowest score wins the hole.
Foursomes, sometimes called alternate shot, are when two-man teams play the same ball, hitting alternating shots. The team with the lowest score wins the hole.
In singles, each match features one player from each team. The player with the lower score on each hole wins that hole. You need 14 1/2 points to win the Cup and 14 points for the defending champion to retain the Cup.
- Friday – four foursome (alternate shot) matches and four better-ball matches
- Saturday – four foursome matches and four fourball matches
- Sunday – 12 singles matches
Ryder Cup teams
Team USA players earn points in tournaments beginning in 2019 and through the 2021 BMW Championship. The top six point earners (Morikawa, Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Cantlay) will automatically secure spots. Captain Steve Stricker will select the remaining six following the 2021 TOUR championship. Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, AND Xander Schauffele are among those expected to be chosen by Stricker.
Team Europe will consist of the top four players from the European Points list (Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, and McIlroy). They are followed by the leading five players from the World Points List (Viktor Hovland, Paul Casey, Matt Fitzpatrick, Lee Westwood, and Shane Lowry). Then Captain Padraig Harrington will make three captain’s picks.
