I really think the X Factor in this tournament is going to be Rafael Nadal. we have seen a taste of what Rafa Nadal is capable of when he comes back from a long period of time off from injury, and I have a feeling that he's going to be intensely motivated to win this tournament. He clearly would have won last year had he not been injured in the final and I feel that the only real tournaments he cares about is this one, the French Open, and the US Open. I think that he's going to make a run and all of these tournaments and I definitely think he's going to be substantially motivated interested to go deep in the Australian Open. Other candidates that I like would be Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. But these tournaments are always strange and difficult to handicap because it's the first major tournament after a large lay off and you never know which player is going to come out rusty. Which players do you guys like potentially knock over the big boys?

I am Not sure what to think about Rafael Nadal performance today I know that it's a tune up for the major but the way he played was just not very good. It makes me think that perhaps he will drop a set in his first match against some lesser opponent.

cant motherfuucking wait to wake up at early am to watch this garbage
Hahaha yeah the time difference really kills it 4 players here in the States. But its still fun to watch early in the morning especially when you have something on the line. The Australian Open is really good for people who like to bet underdogs because a lot of these top players come into the tournament rusty and not having played in two to three months.

Disagree completely about the top players being rusty in the Aussie. That's just not the case. Check history. Coming off long injury layoff is one thing. Like with Nadal. Or how Delpo will be. But for the players who finished last season history shows they fare just fine at the Aussie. These are pros. They know how to get themselves ready for a major.

you make a good point and perhaps it's not like these top players want advance usually they are such heavy favorites that its not like you would bet them anyway, however, you can always take the underdog to win one set A plus money and you will probably hit a lot of those

So Federer pulls out the 2-1 win, but I think this is a good example of what can happen with rust come the majors. Keep it in mind moving forward in the first round.

This result has nothing to do with what happen at the Aussie. Same with Djoker losing to Ivo today. Do you seriously think that would happen in a major? The laser sharp focus just isn't present in these crap lead up events.
Berdych and Ferrer look razor sharp right now. Would you expect either to beat Djok or Fed in 2 wks? Of course not.

Federer Wawa Djoker Berdych Raonic Ferrer Nishikori Murray Gasquet. These types of guys won't go out in first round unless they get a very very unkind draw.

He loses to good players all the time though and seems to have that smug " I don't care " look about him. To me his motivation is suspect.

No, I said playing the set spread is very easy money to play, because usually the top players with rust will open at maybe -2.5 sets @ -140 or higher at times.
This is prime time to earn some early tournament money.
