It was reopened last week, allowing bets to be made on each of the dog races in three states. In a single bet, a $1.60 favourite was backed with a $12,000 bet. The dog was beaten on the post.
The TAB operators taking the bets only agreed to take half of the wagers proposed in the second hour of betting because of the losses.
Otherwise, the Parramatta star¡¯s account would have lost $150,000 in an hour.
It is normal practice at betting agencies with regular punters that bets are often halved to limit the exposure to punters facing losses. After the account had the freeze lifted last week, two bets went through on the Foran account for between $20,000 and $30,000 on two winning dogs.
One paid $1.60 and the other $6.
According to TAB insiders, those bets were most likely to have been placed by a Foran associate using his betting details and account.
They believe the bets from Thursday night were not based on specific tips because they involved every one of the greyhound races and then switched to the obscure horse races in South Africa.
A single bet of $20,000 was placed on a race in Vaal, but the horse ran last.
The betting stopped after the South African wager.
That Foran was released from an intensive rehab program just hours before the betting spree has convinced the TAB the gambler was Foran himself.
The former Manly and now Parramatta player was admitted to rehabilitation in a top-line Queensland facility three weeks ago.
He had taken an overdose of prescription drugs in his Rocks apartment after an acrimonious split from his partner of six years, Rebecca Pope.
The pair have two young children who live with Pope in a new home recently purchased by Foran on the northern beaches.
While rumours of Foran¡¯s betting habits have surfaced in recent weeks, his management has insisted his problems are limited to the relationship breakdown.
Foran returned to training with the Eels yesterday morning and will now continue the rehabilitation process in Sydney because of his commitment to the club.
The Saturday Telegraph contacted Foran and his manager George Mimis last night but they were unavailable for comment.
