Some notes about the Byron Nelson Tournament this week.Notably, the venue change.Previously held at the TPC Las Colinas the new venue is in South Dallas at the new Trinity Forest Golf Course. Some interesting facts about the new course:
1) The course was built on a former landfill site. Therefore, it has no trees....it has no water. It is a links style course. So prior tournament history will not be meaningful.
2) The course is laid out predominantly east to west. The winds will be out of the south at about 10-15 mph.And unseasonal warm ¨C temperatures forecast to be almost 100 degrees on Friday.Normal highs this time of year is about 85 degrees.
3) Holes 3 and 11 will share the same green. At 36,000 sq ft, the green is about the size of a football field (well, it is Texas¡.).Said to be the largest green in North America.
4)Hole 8 is rather short, a 140 yard par 3.And they will reallllly need to stretch it out to get to 140. I suspect it will play shorter.
Good luck and handicap like a winner.

Went to the Wed pro am and one odd thing stood out to me: I was eye level to the trinity forest that is to the south of the course. Then I remembered an article about how they had to use a lot of dirt to make the hills (contour) for the course. The course is about 30-40 ft above ground level (the landfill level). Which means the course is essentially sitting on a hill, above the tree line. Which means if the winds kick up.... good luck. Especially if the wind is out of the south. Wind forecast: Thursday is light, Friday up to 20m gust, Saturday 25m gust, Sunday relatively light.
Here is a quote from Adam Scott about the course and wind:
"The greens were a little quick yesterday in the wind. I mean they're quite severe, some of the slopes on the green, and if they get too fast I think it's going to be a little hard to control anything running up on to the green, you know, kind of needs to find that good balance point of challenging and fair," he said. "I think probably if I was setting the course up the first two days I'd be fairly generous with pin placements and then maybe have at it on the weekend."
Handicap accordingly....

Chaos - Any tips on good seating areas? I want to get a seat at #8 for sure and watch them struggle on that little Par 3. Any other good spots you know of? Taking the wife Saturday, her first pro tourny!

I walked the entire course, thoroughly enjoyed it. Except the Sun. Though they have plenty of places to get out of the sun, There. IS. NO. SHADE. None. If you are wanting to stand along the fairway or around the greens...bring an umbrella. Yes the course has trees to the south and west, but no access for fans.
If you are lucky, as such at the 8th hole, they have covered seating for the public (a grand total of 4 for the entire course). This is actually a fun hole, short distance, so those with a good wedge (100 yards or so, 9 iron for the rest of us) will be able to get it close to the hole. The green is very interesting, lots of slopes away from the center of the green (if the pin is in the middle, the green looks concave). If you hit it over the green, have no clue what happens. Cannot see the back side of the green. Can see some sand traps...other than that dunno. You can see the tops of the tree line...then straight down 20 feet. You will see a lot of birdies (or aces....Lexus should have a car there for the first ace...good advertisement, but they don't) or see a lot of pros scrambling for par. Either or, no in between.
Other good holes will be the 17th (par 3), 18th (par 4), or the middle of the fairway for the 14th (par 5, 630 yards...uphill, then down hill, then dog right...the second shot for the pros will be interesting). If you get the chance, try to score some tickets to the 360 hospitality tent. Excellent views all around...thus 360.

Along with Spieth, Romo, and Staubach...Hunter is a member at the course. So he should have some value. This is a quote from him:
Hunter Mahan likely has more experience than any other player in the field this week ¡ª he's a member, estimates he's rounded Trinity Forest nearly 70 times, and said he expects the course will be "an incredible venue" for the event. If the wind is down, he said fans should expect plenty of birdies, given reachable par 5s and at least one drivable par 4. Mahan expects the course itself will be enough to convert players. "I think the player's opinions are probably ¡ª I don't know really what they are right now but I think throughout the week they're going to understand it more and more and are going to like it more and more."
