So just last night I have two more examples of my previous thread discussing why it is so common that I place one position out of the money.
I played two 8-person tourneys last night, both of which pay out for 1st and 2nd only. And both of which I finished 3rd of course.
I'll skip to the last hand in both cases:
1st tourney:
I was 2nd in chips and went all-in holding pocket kings after the chip leader's raise pre-flop. My opponent turns over A-3 and of course he hits an Ace on the flop and knocks me out.
2nd tourney:
I was 1st in chips and called an all-in holding A-Q. Opponent turns over K-9 and hits K on the flop. I also hit my Q but of course that didn't matter much. A couple hands later I'm 3rd in chips and go all-in after all cards on on the board. I had top pair (jacks) with Ace kicker and my opponent had just rivered two pair (3's and 4's i think). I have no idea why he was still in the hand as I had top pair throughout and we were betting fairly agressively throughout.
The percentage of time that I am finishing one position from the money is rediculous. I'd estimate it at 80% at least. I'm almost done with online poker.
