Tough beats for sure. Keep getting your money in with the best hand like that and you will make money over the long haul (although its hard to not think about the short term beats).

Man you guys I was in a 6 man tourny at the Bellagio the other night. Waiting around for the perfect hand to pound preflop and finally it comes. I get 1 and a 2 suited.
I re raise 600 preflop and get a caller.
Flop comes 3 4 5
BOom I hit the straight. I love it when I get a 1 and a 2 preflop I usually hit 3 4 and a 5 on flop. Anyways to make a long story short some loser with Pokcet kings called me and beat me with 7 kings.
Bullshit flopped a straight and get beat by 7 of a kind

Dude... I will the first to admit that I suck at poker and even I know that 35s should be folded preflop. lw1nBets knows what he's talking about. You should listen to him.

If you want yourself to be a good player, you have to open your range. Not saying you should play every hand or 3 5 all the time. You can't wait for just pocket pairs or suited connectors over a 10.
Poker is all situational based. Situations from the past hands that will help you evaluate what to do on the current and future hands.
Badreligion happened to play aggressive with the 3 5, flop the 2nd nut and gets it all in with the best hand at the time with a dominating percentage to hold up.

We don't have to open up our range to be a good player. In fact, many of us could benefit more by tightening up. There are lots of games (1/2 NL [live] included) where we CAN wait for PP's and suited face cards AND make money.
Do a statistical analysis of your play and I can guarantee you that almost ALL of your profit will come from PP's and suited broad ways. The majority of all your other hands will be losers.
OP raising an UTG limper w/ 53s was a mistake regardless of whether he flops/doesn't flop a straight or if his straight holds up/fails.
It is a mistake because our raise isn't likely to fold out better or get called by worse. It's even more unlikely that the UTG limper will fold because he'll be limping with hands he wants to play but is afraid to raise with. Hands like med/small pairs, smaller suited aces, and unsuited face cards... hands he won't fold to a standard raise.
Basically, OP's raise puts more money into a pot that we have very little chance of winning. Our only hope is to catch a miracle flop...

the commentary in these forums is an embarrassment...
OP, you played both hands perfectly obviously.
Anyone can scold you for playing 35 and losing to AA because you were beat pre-flop.
But when you play it to the river and make him get all his money in without that last 4, you'll be hailed as genius.
Almost all of us know when nits and rocks are playing a big overpair.
Our entire strategy is to outflop them (which you did) and make them get all their money in when they are huge underdogs, or play scare cards (i.e. 4 to a straight or 4 to a flush) when you have air to bluff them off the big hand.
Apparently, some of these posters don't understand that is one of the simplest concepts in profitable poker.
Thank god people are creative and play hands other than big pairs.
Playing and winning with a hand like 3/5 opens up the entire tables range and puts people on tilt. That's when the real money starts flying around.
A table of nits is the last table in the room you would ever want to sit at.

thank god someone in here knows about poker,
i had been raising the limper regardless of wheter he was utg or not, b/c he was call folding so many times
i was starting to think there was no one on covers who knew the first thing about poker
it was a situation based spot, as I had been doing the same exact raise with AA to garbage and folding to reraises, that time I took a shot with a bigger stack, and was ready to fold post flop
thank you for restoring some sanity, i really dont understand the logic in any of these poster threads
its so easy to dominate a game once you figure out players are only playing premium hands

also, i had been reraising a lot light, and getting played back at light as evidenced by some showdowns, that i knew i was about to bust someone with the right flop , while being ready to fold
