Agree and disagree (again) with Sharp....
Jay Kornegay runs a great book as far as props and lines on games that others (MGM properties, for one) will not take.....there are a number of books in this town that will NOT take teasers on pre-season football...weird. The Hilton has always been a leader with their action....
As to comps.....If you bet the ponies and can average putting $1000 in action each day, most racebook directors will get you at least 3.5% back in comps....easily can be rounded off to 4%. Palms does up to 7% on some big weekends and others will give you up to 5% on exotic race bets...exactas, trifectas, etc. Sports comps are VERY VERY different....they are almost always an "under the table" comp due to corporate policies. A $220 bet is a useless number...telling me that you have to bet $1100 for $5 is only something that the locals (non-runners) would care about.
If you are a strong multi-dime bettor, and are known to the sportsbook (meaning that you have been there before and give them your business)...you can expect good treatment. The more "dimes"..the better the treatment. Using Sharp's formula...you have to put through $110,000 in action to get a decent (not great) steak dinner.....I sincerely doubt that anyone in this forum does that on a vacation.
Fish, to address your last question. If you are not someone who can bet at least 3-5dimes on a sports wager...and multiple times with the same book in a very short period of time, you are not going to get much consideration (comps)...they will respect your action and do what they can for you...especially the local books (not Stations).....The horse bettors who can put through a dime a day are revered and courted by the books. I am not saying lose at the horses...just the action. Remember, this is not the casinos money...they get 15 cents on every dollar that you wager, they LOVE race bettors that win...and keep betting. Sports is a different breed altogether.
In short..the food's great, the weather is wonderful, and the people (on the whole) really care. Find a local spot that you like (The South Point could be a good example), give them your business, become a regular.....and this is a great place to live.

I go and stay at the LVH EVERY Month for a week to 10 days. All I bet is the Super Book. Hit me up if you want. I know EVERYONE there. From all the floor managers, the finance manager, etc. If you have not booked your room yet let me know. Will help in anyway I can. I will be there from Wednesday September the 8th until Thursday the 16th. Let me know.....

Just PM'd You............
Just PM'd You............
Sharp...not trying to be a problem here...sorry if it came off that way...those of us in the industry have enough problems and don't have to argue with each other.
I did use your "formula" for the sports comp analogy...$1100 for $5 in comps....and said that was why sports comping was a useless topic.,...unless, as you correctly said...to paraphrase..."you know someone". Which was my point about being "known" to the sportsbook. I have been part of bets in excess of $50K the bettor received zilch. I have been part of multiple $5-10K bets from a regular, he got dinners, theatre tickets, rooms....
As to the percentage take on race tracks....sorry, again, if I was wrong...I did believe that the Magna contract was lower than 19%. But, regardless, the point that I was making was that race betting is a "turnkey operation" and always pure profit to the casino...as in contrast to the sportsbook side of the business. 99% of all those who come to Vegas looking to bet sports (and get bennies) do not understand/know this.....and, to make matters worse, the Players Club marketing people don't want the bettors to know this either. They come up to the sports window with their card looking to add "points"...as though they were playing the slots. The casinos don't really care about educating the bettors.
Once again, sorry for how you interpreted my posting.

have lived in Las Vegas for 20 year and have never found a sportsbook overall better than the Hilton esp since Jay Kornegay came over from the Imperial Palace which was "hockey central" when Ralph Engalstad was still alive.
I know that NHL hockey is "small action" at most books BUT the Hilton is the only one with a 10 cent hockey moneyline and usually has the highes "dog odds" on any given day.
can't really speak to comps because I'm not a "high roller" BUT I give then enough action during football and hockey season for free buffet, which are EXCELLENT esp on fridays. I think it's a hell of a lot better value than most of the overpriced "name" buffets on the strip.

Fish....
Yes...and if you are into horse racing.....they feed all the races into your hotel room and provide you with a phone account so you can bet the ponies.....and, while naked, in your bed, with someone you found at the casino bar, drinking champagne!!!!!!!
Well.....at least the first part of that was accurate....lol
Rink....Perfect posting. Jay Kornegay is the best "marketer" of the sportsbook in this town. He knows what the customer wants and is not afraid to post a line to give the customer some action. The NUMBER ONE sportsbook in Las Vegas.

being a local, my only complaint about the Hilton is that they don't have phone or computer accounts. I used to have a computer account at Stations BUT they discontinued the "dial-up" feature a couple years ago.
AND, with the possable exception of LeRoys, Stations NHL odds are the WORST in town
I live south of the airport and it's kind of a pain in the ass to drive to the Hilton just to book a bet (I'm old and lazy). closest sportsbooks for me are Green Valley Ranch (a Stations property) and South Point. South Point NHL odds are so-so BUT at least they do offer "puck lines" like the Hilton.
South Point gets HUGE crowds for NFL Sundays during the season IF your into loafing with a bunch of screaming drunks.

Stations just added phone accounts for the horse players. I had a computer account also; but didn't like the lack of options on betting as well as, originally, no horses.
Perhaps, you can do the phone account for sports now that they have added the ponies.

really not much of a horse player. I haven't been to the strip in years BUT I know Mirage corporation used to have phone accounts years ago because I had one at the Treasure Island which was a Mirage property back then. might check MGM-Mirage spotsbooks or the Wynn.
I really can't understand WHY Resorts International management, who owns the Hilton, is so opposed to phone or computer accounts esp in this economy. seems like ANY cash flow would be a plus for ANY Nevada casino.
