HELP - Need LV Advice...

Hi all,

I've handicapped for a living for 7 years and considering moving to LV.  But I have a family, so I still want to use a mobile/web-based wagering interface and work/enter picks from home, and not have to physically be at a casino/sportsbook to wager every single time.

I know about Cantor Gaming, and their interface, but are there other similar options, those you can logon to anywhere in town or by using residential internet service, that are available from Vegas sportsbooks ?

You live in Canada and use Pinnacle as your sportsbook, which is the best online sportsbook around.  So many Americans wish they could use Pinny.  Why do you feel the need to move to Vegas to do this for a living?  I live in Vegas and it's not a good place to raise kids IMO.  I have visited Vancouver before and loved it.  I would much rather live there.

-I will tell you that I would rather wager on any/all sports and props/options through Pinnacle online from a tree house as opposed to any sports book in Vegas including the Hilton SB....


No offense, but if you actually handicap for a living, you would treat it like a streamlined business and rather do it from a home office (in Canada in your case).... rather than run such a handicapping business through casino sports books....

-Another reason is that handicapping for a business is a lot easier with an A+ rated SB like Pinnacle since it's a crap load easier to have deposits fast easy and convenient,

.... as opposed to driving to The Strip where you would have to drive to whatever casino you are wagering through and then deal with tickets after the game..... Most handicappers that do it for a living actually do not need to obssessively watch every down-period-quarter-etc etc. of the games you wagered on... Play through a casino daily and see if you are not forced to be away from your family for 3-4 hours at a time if not longer.

Speaking of Family, possibly the best reason of all.... You would not exactly be husband/father of the year, if you uprooted your family from Canada... and then dragged them all to this "non" family environment...

My lord.... I just noticed that you live in British Columbia.... You'd move from that cool part of N.America to come to this dust bowl of nonsense? Yikes!


Leaving Pinnacle with your Canadian based account to actually live in Vegas to gamble allegedly for a living, makes no sense.

To answer your question, there are places in Vegas where you can wager online or on your phone but I would still much rather have a Pinnacle account and stay in Canada.

Station Casinos in Vegas have internet accounts where you can wager online but they don't offer nearly the same amount of options that you'd find on Pinny and their lines usually suck.  Currently, Leroys sportsbook in Vegas offer accounts that you can bet from your cell phone but only if you have an Android or Blackberry.

Even with both of these options available, I would still rather stay in Canada and use Pinny.

@Dennishopson: thank you for sharing your opinions, but I can tell you don't know much about Canada/BC/Pinnacle or professional handicapping, other than what you've heard or read.

Let us know what you end up doing if you end up moving to Vegas.  Also would like to know what your betting strategy is.  Anyways GL!!

I use a push-pull system for MM ( a la day-trading).  I like to withdraw funds as often as possible (pull), so I only deposit, on a daily basis, what I'm going to play (push) for that date.  This system keeps my balance 'square' with Pinnacle day-to-day.
For example, deposit $1000 in the morning, play 4 full-game ATS/ML/point props @ $250 each, withdraw winning difference at end of day.  Repeat next day.  If balance is < $1000 at end of day, supplement w/ another deposit for next day. 

For this system to work, the sportsbook has to provide fast and cheap transactions in order to minimize your transaction costs and increase your time value of money.  So withdrawals cost $15/day, a la moneybookers or instadebit.  Paying that for withdrawals on a daily basis is much more efficient than using wire bank transfers, takes way too long and costs too much, the most important variable here is the time value of $$.

For handicapping, I use a simulation (monte carlo) and a multiple regression model for statistical analysis.  Weighted variables include (a) stats as well as (b) technical indicators like rsi/momentum, and (c) nominal variables like coaching style, # of injuries, schedule/rivalry/revenge angles.

Plerase enlighten me, since it seems like you haven't capped at all, haven't been to Vegas before, and don't really know about Pinnacle...

I guess that I've only been doing this for 25 years in 5 states, 6 SB accounts (4 yrs with Pinny, etc etc... I know about what it actually takes on a daily basis.... and it's far more involved than just picking a higher percentage than 53% to churn a profit.

dennis is right North. I can't even fathom wanting to move to Vegas from Canada. It's so much easier to make wagers here and at much better prices.

@BigBaby11: prices are important, I agree, but so is liquidity.  Hope you realize you have to turn over 50-70% greater profit here just for cost-of-living difference...

@dennisHopson:  you're the average, bombastic gambler who likes to talk; i thank you again for your opinions and concern.  the fact that you're not humble proves to me you've never consistently turned a profit in handicapping.  I suggest you stick with the 'other', 'your' crowd', I'm not going to glean anything useful from you, no offense. 

Move to Vegas in drive/park at casino SBs...sit around, play "cash the ticket hassles" assuming you win ever, and yes... have about 15% of the betting options that you could possibly wager on at Pinnacle, BetJamaica, Greek, 5Dimes, or any number of other A+ rated SBs offshore....

.....Have fun physically picking up your winnings if they happen and try money management like that... Obviously, you haven't factored in other overhead that you will incur by doing all of this in person, eh son?

As far as me not knowing anything about Canada, well kid, I've had dual citizenship since I was 14... Work reasons, and the glaring fact that 75% of my immediate and extended Family is from there....

Speaking of citizenship son, you can't just move to the US with "professional handicapper" (which you aren't)... as an occupation to get a visa in this country.... Try being a physician (that means doctor btw) or anRN, and it still can take 6-8 months... 

Have I forgotten to ask you where I can send you "Father Of The Year" cards for thinking moving your alleged children and wife to Las Vegas, one of the shittiest places to raise and have a Family in North America?

Geez, you really make Vancouver sound horrible.  I have only gone there once so I cannot make valid statements about what it's like but I really enjoyed it and thought it was a great place.  I stayed in a hotel by the airport, traveled into the downtown area and walked all over down there, and then took a train into a suburb to some huge mall.  None of the areas I was in seemed seedy or dangerous at all.  The whole place seemed really nice and quaint but again, I was only there once so what do I know.

We don't know how much you know about Vegas.  I would assume you have visited here before but do you really know Vegas?  There are some nice areas here, like far north Summerlin or south Green Valley/Henderson but that is about it. I reiterate, it is not a good place to raise kids IMO but I cannot tell you how to raise your kids.

It seems you have already made up your mind to come here.  If that is true, then I would like to make a suggestion to you.  Whether or not you heed my advice is totally up to you.  Since you have kids, I would suggest moving to Boulder City which is the area I would want to live if I had kids here.  It's not perfect but I would feel a lot better raising them there instead of in Vegas.  In case you don't know, Boulder City is a small city southeast of Vegas and Henderson on the way to Hoover Dam.  There are no casinos in Boulder City and it is quite small.

As I mentioned before, there are two ways to bet on sports in Nevada without having to go into a casino everyday.  You can open an account at the Station casinos and wager online.  I did open an account there a few years ago to try but I didn't like it at all.  The software was very touchy and Stations just doesn't offer enough betting options for a pro gambler.  For example, during a college football Saturday, out of 30 games, they might offer totals on only 5-10 games.  It's ridiculous.  Plus their lines are shit.

The other option is you can open an account with Leroys, download the app to your Blackberry or Android phone, and bet from there.  This is what I am currently doing and it suits my purposes fine.  They offer more betting options than Stations does and their lines are ok.

But you will never find the same amount of betting options in Vegas that you can find with an offshore book.  If that doesn't bother you then don't worry about that aspect.

I have read that Cantor Gaming, which runs a few books here, is working on getting a betting app for cell phones up and running as well so maybe that will be available soon.

It's all up to you, I am just trying to give you as much info as I can to assist with your decision.  Good luck.

@Handsdown: I sincerely appreciate your advice and judging by the way you present your thoughts, I can tell you're heads-up.

 

Van is a global city with great natural surroundings, right.  Problems abound here as in most other large metro areas, that was my point.  City of Van, school-wise and opportunities-wise, is also not a good place for kids.  No real museums, organized family events, etc.  The 'amusement park' looks like a traveling county fair.  North and West Van are nicer but exorbitantly expensive, close but across the Lions Gate.  Richmond, Burnaby, and Surrey are ok but congested/overrun with multiplexes.  Anywhere the train goes, you pay close to a quarter per litre in taxes at the pump.  You couldn't have noticed that when you visited, haha.  I live near Chilliwack, mostly farmlands on Fraser River, far enough away so we only go to Van when we have to.  Which would be exactly my approach to residing near Vegas.  Hence the question regarding remote access I posted.

I was mostly raised and lived all over the States.  Went to school and worked in Tucson/UofA and went up to Vegas twice a year.  Tucson is a lot more liveable I know.  Regarding Vegas, yes Summerlin and Henderson are more liveable and hence have more value, but I'll also look into Boulder City per your suggestion.

I am sincerely not meaning to criticize you, but if you are actually are doing this as a business, and you accurately familiar with Vegas and the extremely limited betting options that Vegas SBs have to offer as Handsdown and everyone here in Vegas knows ,

....that should actually be enough reasons right there.

  I would assume that if you are wagering as a professional business that you are not going to be a bushel basket dozen wagers a day or more 'ala Pete Rose. that being said, why wouldn't you want to wager in any other venue other than Vegas, that would provide you with as many options to choose from for which to place a select number of sides/props-totals-options-ingames-etc-etc ?

Would that not maximize your profit potential?

.....If the issue is more that you have decided that you don't like living in Vancouver as you have described by sharing in this thread the pitfalls and negatives of vancouver that I freely admit to not being aware of, more power to you for wanting to leave...

 Handsdown and I merely were surprised that someone would move from most anywhere to bring wife and kids, and raise a family here in Vegas. No place worse for kids for a plethora of reasons. Sorry, but it's my opinion that family and raising kids comes before anything.

You can wager/handicap for a living anywhere at all if you are smart. You can streamline it better online with 3 A+ rated offshore Ssportsbooks than doing it through any Vegas SB, if you are truly trying to maximize profits and effectiveness.

..........you seem to be more about that you decided that Vancouver is not where you want to be for you and your family...... For wanting to get your family away from the negatives of what you described in Vancouver, I applaud you.   Once again, I was not aware of all that bad stuff happening there... My family is mostly from Toronto, and provincial Ontario, and speckled around the Eastern half of CDN, so it's my enlightened (by you) perception, that Vancouver is very different than the other 75% of Canada that I am more familiar with.

....Suggestion to you north49, google corporate style apts/condos and rent one for yourself for one month. get more of a day to day feel for Vegas. Not just different SBs, but also really try and get a feel for this city. It's really not normal at all. On top of your realizing what we are attempting to express to you about how limited betting options are here in Vegas (understatement) ....... I truly believe after reading and getting the perception that you very much seem to want to get your family out of Vancouver, you will realize that moving the kids to raise them here in LV of all places, presents a bunch different negatives for you in the long run.

Move here for a month before you make the leap. Check it out by yourself. you might find that getting out of Vancouver and moving to Vegas to further effective wagering are two miles apart issues.

@handsDown: the emerging casino technologies you're discussing will be far superior to Pinnacle and all other 'A+' , ahem, offshore books in my opinion. 

These are spear-headed major software projects, funded in billions of dollars by investment banks as you probably know (Cantor-Fitz, and Deutsche Bank).  So, Wall Street may very well be BETTING, relatively soon, that the Nevada Gaming Control Board will be given full legal authority to manage and regulate software/hardware/financial transactions for NV internet gambling, provided to NV residents only, at first... 

At the same time, politicos and bankers were the ones who directed the FBI in their recent sweep of the poker sites, all off-shore sportsbooks holding US resident accounts are standing by... 

This is a major part of the pivotal strategy, or maybe the last ditch effort, to save your 'dust bowl' from economic collapse...  

Give credit to Pinnacle for pre-emptively removing their US resident accounts.   All hell is going to rain down on offshores in a year or two, imo. 

The emerging technologies should make the sports-betting product better and better in Vegas.  Another good news item is that William Hill, the large British sports wagering firm, has bought out the Leroy's and Cal-Neva sportsbook operations in Nevada and are supposed to bringing all their years of expertise and innovation here soon.

The only problem with sportsbetting in Vegas is the lack of options compared to offshore.  For example, when I had my 5 Dimes account open, I loved to bet lots of international soccer from all over the world.  I would bet soccer matches from Russia, Turkey, Japan, etc etc.  The lines on these matches, because they aren't very popular, were often not very sharp.  I cannot bet that stuff in Vegas.  The only place that offers soccer is the Vegas Hilton and the amount of games offered is quite limited.  So I miss that.

However, if you don't bet the more obscure stuff like soccer, and are only concerned with more mainstream sports, then you'll be fine here.  I was more concerned about the living situation and what kind of environment you would be bringing your children into.  But I'm sure you're a responsible parent and won't let anything bad happen to them.   Please give strong consideration to Boulder City as a place to live.  It has the feel of Mayberry RFD right here in Nevada.  Old-fashioned and more family-oriented.  As long as you reside within the state of Nevada, you can use the Leroy's betting application on your phone and bet.

I bet with Pinnacle and SportsInteraction..... I goto vegas and see the odds and wonder wtf???  IMO, the odds on these sites are way better, the future odds in Vegas are a joke compared to online sites (from what I have found).... just doesn't make sense to me to wager in sportsbooks when you get worse odds and least options of games and wagers to select from.

I goto Vegas a bit, actually going this upcoming weekend.... yes I will do sportsbetting cause I enjoy having some beers and watching the games, cash my tickets etc, or toss them, lol...... but for a living? First i can't afford to do it for a living, but if I were to, would definatley stick to the online sites.

Sure Vegas, the strip, Fremont is all nice and fancy, I love visiting there, can have drinks anywhere, all the sportsbooks and casinos, but go off the strip, tour around the other parts, would I move my family there? heck no....

@handsdown: regarding soccer, risk-laden imo, draws/-0.5/+0.5, that's a lot of outcomes...  plus a hedging issue when you have to price not one but two other outcomes according to your selected price. If I may, what was your betting strategy ?  Also, did you closely follow a few selected teams, or carpet bomb the field ? Thanks for the heads-up regarding Boulder City.  Mayberry RFD is exactly the setting I'm after.  Not planning on driving to LV much, other than account setup, airport, occasional dinner.

No living/hanging out in LV for me other than occasional family dinner/show/event.  Rest is just business.  That means I'm not planning on living near the Stratosphere, nor directing my wife to solicit, nor having my son peddle junk in alleys in case I go broke. 

These technologies @handsdown is discussing are/will allow you to enter your bets and manage your account, anywhere in NV at first, and eventually everywhere down the road.  And they will leave Pinnacle and other 'powerhouse sportsbooks' in the dust.

Also, do you think the 'advantages' of off-shore books (# of props, line prices, etc.) are real advantages, or just another way for sportsbooks to take your $$$ ? 

Just trying to help here, free to ignore:

Line movements/prices should have absolutely NO EFFECT on your decisions.  You can read into them anything you want short-term, but in long-term RLM's and other technical indicators are highly inaccurate.  Only matters of discussion are CONSISTENCY in winning and most importantly, I can't emphasize enough, MM. 

Public/square/sharp %'s are all irrelevant, ony thing that matters is your bankroll and your frame of mind; don't even look at/blot out/ignore the prices/movements and related discussions.  They're nothing but psychological obstacles in the long-term imo.  In fact, flip them on their head and don't even wager on events with very high volatility... 

Use your free time instead to build a bare-bones, simple model/system, and refine it as you go along, trust me the confidence it instills will be far greater than wasting your time figuring out an angle based on prices/movements.. .
