I'm looking from some input. I just bought a 40" HD 1080p TV. So my question is..... What¡¯s my best bet to get the best picture and the value to watch movies and maybe play games? Do I buy a PS3, XBOX360, Blu-Ray or HD DVD player?
It seems like everyone has a different opinion. I do enjoy playing some games, so I'm wondering if that's my best way to go for value.

Just make sure you get a good HDMI cable for any componets you purchase. All of the console systems will have one. You can go Blu-Ray or a HD DVD player. They are still going head to head. Right now the HD is getting the best of the battle.
But Blu-Ray stuff is getting cut way down in price to compete back. Personally I like the HD stuff better. But you can pretty much toss a coin for quality.

I'm relatively new to this as well. I'm not quite sold on these HDMI cables yet. Perhaps I'm just not as discriminating a person when it comes to "quality audio and video?"
How dramatic of a difference are these HDMI cables to make? Or is it just the hype?

I just picked up a Monster 1080 cable. I get my HD box tomorrow, so I'm interested to see the difference between that and the regular one the cable company bring. I hear the difference is extremely noticeable...but we'll see. I'll let you know.

Don't waste your money on monster. You just spent 500% more than you need to. And pick up a PS3 ... you get the games and Blu-Ray ... big misconception that the 360 is cheaper but with all the add-ons to make it close to comparable to the ps3 its actually more expensive. Next firmware update should hopefully have divx support and then you'll be able to download divx movies/tv shows and just stream them from your computer and watch them on your new TV through your PS3.

Thanks for the advice. I was always leaning towards the PS3. As for the Monster cables, I'm going to try them out tomorrow and if there's no difference I'll be taking them back as it cost me $120 for one cable.

Some of it is a neatness/convenience factor. It's nice to run one cable from each component to your receiver & then to your TV, then be able to do all your switching through your receiver. Others believe they get a clearer picture through hdmi than component cables. Personally, I didn't see any difference.
........& I agree with the comment on Monster cables. It is a quality product, but you don't get any better performance from them because they look nice. Definitely not worth the $$.

You are paying a price for the name monster. You can get the same quality cable by other makers.
The difference in the HDMI cable will depend on the quality of your monitor. But there is a difference.
Lippsman, care to expound on this "difference" a bit? And is it worth the extra money? Currently I'm running it off the cable provided by Comcast and I think it's equivalent to some of their best show room feeds in the store. However I'm always in the market for improvement.
I'm running it on a 42" Panasonic Viera Plasma 1080p direct from the cable source.

Well what you said tells volumes right there. The showroom feed that is being split about 50 to 100 ways is the same quality as your one plasma at home. That's a problem, your feed should look better than the showrooms.
Almost all sets that I have set up that are say 50" or bigger I've noticed a difference in the quality. If you already have the cable I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes you have to look pretty hard to notice the difference.
