18 people from the Professional Hockey Writers Association vote for the top 3 in order. The votes are sent via email by the 10 minute mark of the 3rd period in any cup clinching game.
They can state a caveat such as Bob #1 if the game is tied but if Barkov scores the winner than he would get elevated above Bob on that persons vote. Or if McDavid gets 2 more points regardless of a Florida win he would get that persons #1 vote.
If Edmonton wins tonight all votes are void and the process starts again in game 6.
Knowing this information you may see a lot of line movement as the game goes on between different players.
With the odds on Bob and Barkov about the same this is good information to know. Also there is a small outside chance that say McDavid has say 5 points in the game and it is tied or Florida is up by say 1 He could end up with the win.
