It will be for a job. I've read lots of forum-related posts (here and elsewhere) of people doing the same, mostly without a job yet though, and nearly everyone tells them not to do it. Granted, I guess its completely different without having a job, but most comments still center around how bad the economy is, how its only getting worse, how crime is bad, how vegas is nothing like what it seems like once you live here, etc etc. Someone please give me something positive to look forward to!

Be careful, I know people that went there promised a job, and got laid-off after a short time. Vegas has a huge temp market, while not a lot of permanent positions floating around, even at the major casinos.

The first thing that you need to do, regardless of where you relocate, is to assess your job in terms of its particular need in that city/area and the future potential of that job.
There are hundreds of cities in this country that have the same issues as Las Vegas, this recession is not unique to gaming and hospitality.
Las Vegas can offer a unique quality of life, great weather, a younger community, and at a much lower cost factor than many cities with such hi-level amenities. For what you would have to pay for living costs here, you would have to live in a high crime-rate neighborhood in many cities (once again, I mean cities with the calibre of amenities that Vegas offers).
The key to it all is the job you will have here and its stability and potential for the future. If it's positive, and you can limit your gambling to "recreational,"...then you should love it here.

The economy isn't THAT bad. It seems to have leveled off here. I feel that the people hit hardest by the economic down swing were builders and construction trade types. SO much stuff was being built 5-6 years ago (houses and casinos) and when the recession hit, all that development stopped. How do you feed all those people?
Crime is bad here. But, most of it is petty and it is pretty well concentrated in certain areas. Mess around on Metros Crime Map and you can figure out where the "bad" areas are. Mostly North and East of The Strip.
You'll certainly have a different set of problems once you move here... Easy access to drugs, booze, gambling, and women is a lot tougher than it sounds. If you view those things as a pleasant distraction then you'll be fine. If you view them as a life style... good luck.

i lived there last year and things werent bad. i lived in the nice part though up by summerlin. Finding a place to live couldnt be easier as everyone is just looking for renters regardless of credit background. check out craigslist and you can get a good idea of whats out there. tons of jobs in the food and bev industry and very easy to find a furnished room for rent that is affordable.

I have lived in Vegas for a little over 13 years now. As with any place, it has its ups and downs. People somewhat live in their own world here but there is always something to do. The economy may not be great, but its not as bad as people make it out to be.

i lived in lv for 7 years and just recently moved to oregon. although i don't think i could ever move back there, lv does have some redeeming qualities.
legal sportsbetting- this is what i miss most. you can get your action and get paid mere seconds after the game has ended. no bullshit.
mild winters- vegas can get chilly in wintertime, especially at night, but it is very mild compared to the northeast or midwest.
restaurants/food options- i am not just talking about the 5 star wolfgang puck joints either. vegas is a melting pot, so just about any kind of cuisine is available. there are several great butchers/foreign markets as well. not to be left unsaid is the fact that food can be had at any time of the day. are you hungry at 2am? not a problem
live sports- although vegas is hurting for a decent football team, the UNLV b-ball team is pretty good. if a mwc rival (new mexico, byu) comes to town- the thomas and mack gets really loud and crazy. the minor league hockey team , las vegas wranglers, has a loyal following. the wranglers play in a top notch arena (orleans arena), easy parking is to be had, and concessions are very reasonable.
These are just a few positive things about LV that i experienced in my time there. Good luck in making your decision.

hope you already have one lined up. 15 unemployment here in the city.
that being said, all the +++'s people have mentioned are true esp IF your single. nore good looking tail in this town than you can shake your winkie at. "sportsbook loafing" is the regional sport.
as for real estate, you can get a 3 or 4 bedroom home that used to be 400K for around 180k now in quite neighborhood. the market really hasn't shaken out yet so I would recommend a rental the first year.
BUT forget the "legalized prostitution". that's outside Clark County (Las Vegas). you have to go "over the Hump to Parump for a (legal) Hump". in town we have asian massage parlors and the "tickle and tease" so called "gentelman's clubs", which are a BIG waste of time and $$$, BUT NO legal brothels

Worst mistake of my life was moving here. I came out about a year ago. I left a great job in a big beautiful city for the desert. I don't know what I was thinking. Vegas has the worst drivers of any place I have ever been, the people here are extremely superficial and narrow minded. Las Vegas is actually a very small town with a big town complex. DMV and insurance fees are insane here and really null out the benefit of no state tax. The biggest mistake I made was buying a house. I got a great deal on the house but now I am stuck unless I want to rent it out and have destroyed. There is no pride in ownership here and everything is a big credit card. If you drive a hummer and live in a shitty apartment, check to check you will love it. Don't forget to bring the most flamboyant semi casual clothing you can find on clearance at Ross!

This is where the real asshole in me comes out and tells you THANK YOU
Iv always enjoyed the misery of others,
I remember playing Blackjack at the RIO a few years ago and this fat dealer from Michigan seemed miserable and I said to him, dude, your not meant for this job, this is for people who put on a show and act, Its for people who can fake caring thats why you get green chips bet for you.
He looked at me and said point blank
YOUR WRONG, He said
"This job is for miserable people and people who thrive on the misery of others, Its why I became a dealer and moved out to vegas, Where are you gonna find more miserable people than in a casino"
tears rolled down my eyes because I couldnt stop laughing to the point I started choking.
