Bellagio Robbery: Guy made off with $1.5 Million in Chips

A Bellagio robbery that took place in the posh Las Vegas resort today, saw a male armed bandit make off with $1.5 million in casino chips.

The thief escaped on a motorcycle.

Authorities believe he may have committed a similar crime in the area, less than a week ago.

Police say the man involved in the Bellagio robbery stole chips ranging in value from $100 to $25,000.

They say he walked into the casino with a gun, at 3:50am, robbed a craps table and sped off into the night, wearing a jumpsuit and a bike helmet.

Police suspect the same man robbed the Las Vegas Suncoast Hotel & Casino poker room about on December 9.

In this incidence, the thief also sped away on a motorcycle.

That heist netted less than $20,000 from a poker room cashier, police said.

Gordon Absher, spokesman for Bellagio owner MGM Resorts International, says casino chips aren't the same as cash.

"At some point they have to be redeemed," Absher said.

LOL... what is the point in robbing casino chips unless you are going to redeem them $500 at a time. Idiot!

Cips are an easy conversion at 50- 75% of face value plenty of guys will buy them.

Bellago flags can be redeemed through out the world it is comman for big card players to carry chips they call (flags)usually 500 chips rather than cash easier moving through customs.

The 25000 chips are seriously accounted for and those would be hard to redeem but the $100 chips are almost as good as currency, they will catch him though and I wouldn't want to get caught by the guys that will be after him.

yeah, he should be fine with the $100 chips but if he got away with $1.5 million that quickly, i doubt there were too many small chips taken.

Wasn't there a movie where they gave strippers the stolen chips and they went in and cashed them?

person and strippers are the best way to clean these chips up. High end person is the way to go.

How are they gonna prove it was him even if he does end up trying to exchange them? They can accuse all they want, but what kind of proof will they be able to offer?

Fourtunatly for the Casino they just offer a re issue of chips calling all held chips back by a date and when they eventually get all the chips back, if any of the chip markers were logged stolen they will refuse to pay those chips, anyone left holding non stolen old chips will also have to redeem them or risk losing their value. The Casino's rechip every so often anyway it's not unheard off. In private high stakes games all over the world where chips(flags) are used as currency the Bellago chip just became much less attractive thats for sure...

If you have a stack of Bellagio 5k chips laying around now is not the time to bring them as your stake in a game in Vegas..

$500 - $25,000 will be IMPOSSIBLE TO REDEEM. Radio
Coded. I'm also sure in addition Bellagio will redo all
$500 + chips so he can't pawn off on table (there are really not many $500 + chips there anyway. $100 I believe are redeemable. $5 to $25 are easily redeemable but I don't suspect he has many of those.
Guy was an idiot and went for the BIG BIG chips.

Has anyone ever played craps between 3 00 - 4 00 am in the middle of the week on a slow month. There's usually one table open with 3 or 4 boxmen yawning the night away. It doesn't take much to point a gun , fill a bag and make an 11 second dash to the nearest exit , jump on your motorcycle and take off.
My thinking is that he had inside help from one of the security guards on duty that night. All the guard has to do is text the culprit and give him the green light. Preferably when the guards are doing their rounds on the other side of the casino.
As far as him cashing any chips !! I don't think he has a prayer to cash in any of the big chips, but he should be able to cash in most of the $ 100 chips on a busy weekend.
