One
summer afternoon at Sahara Hotel in1969. My two brothers-in-law and I sat down
at a 100 blackjack table. Double deck blackjack .. (which was a lot more than
today's dollars.)
Each of us put up 2 grand.
There was just the 3
of us on the table.. We started out betting 2 chips at a time 200.00.. right
away we started hitting like crazy, seems the dealer would bust every time. So
naturally we all kept increasing our bets. Before long we each had about
5000.00.and as I looked around more and more people began to gather, before we
knew it there was a crowd.. Two pit bosses, one position at each corner were
watching us with that famous mafia glare while security guards moved in behind
us. But, we were not cheating or counting. Just hot. Since it was just the 3
of us at the table, one of the in-laws Frank, who was drinking a lot, began
betting 3 hands at a time..500.00 each hand. The booze was flowing and we were
high fiving each after each win. We were too superstitious even to cut the deck.
So we actually tipped a female by-stander one black chip to cut the offered deck
every time.
Within about an hour I had over 8,000.. One of the in-laws
who was betting 3 hands at a time was up about 38,000, and the other one, Jim
was up about 10,000.. Soon the table turned cold, I had to drag them away
from the table to the cashier, sure enough, security and a pit boss followed. I
was starting to get nervous as they were counting out hundred dollar bills to
us. After we collected or money we moseyed over to the door, and the pit boss
followed us all the way out the door without saying a word, just staring.
As we started walking down the side walk I was looking behind me and
actually expecting to get mugged or something before we got back to our hotel ,
the Flamingo. I hailed the first cab that came by, even though it was still
daylight, I didn't trust anybody. They were really drunk out of their
minds. They even tipped the Cabby a hundred bucks, I'm thinking, geez your wives
and kids back home could really use that money. When we got back up to their
room, I said Frank why don't you wire $ 25,000 home to your wife right now..I'll
even accompany take you down to western union. Okay sure, he said.. So I went
next door to my room to shower..
Couple of hours
later, I headed next door to go with him to wire the money.. To my amazment.
Frank had gone downstairs to the in-house casino. I shook Jim to wake him and
said, why in the world did you let him go down there alone ? He said, man I'm
not his babysitter...So I took off to find him.. I located him about an hour
later next door in the Holiday Inn at a Blackjack table.
Sure enough, he
lost back all of his 38,000 plus a couple of thousand of his own money. He said
to me. "wow you are just in time I need to borrow some money. I said friend, No
way in hell I will loan you money as long as we are in Vegas.
Needless to say, he went home broke. Jim and I
returned with most of our money.
Drinking too much will get you
eventually.

Seen this happen a hundred times. Only a few times for that much dough. 38k. FORTY years ago is a couple hundred grand. Tough tough story to read. To this day only a handful of strip casinos let you western union money out. Wild bills on strip I think is only one. ABut almost all of them let you send it in, those bastards.
Orleans does also but it is off strip and more of a locals joint.

Great Story. Just wondering though, Is that guy still your brother in law?
Yes, they still are part of my family.. but Frank , the Brother-in-law who asked for the loan at the BJ table is now in bad shape from drinking all those years..Had part of stomach removed and sewn up, he is about 72 years old now, I think. He has a decent pension and still lives same house..In fact after one of his trips his wife took winnings and paid off the house..
I will say this.. that guy was a gambler.. Vegas even sent a private airplane for him once.. they knew he was a chump. he finally went broke (Hope he never reads this.) He was ticked about me not loaning him the money for a long time. but then one day he said to me, you know, you where right about that.
