I've only invested in aggressive growth stock mutual funds in the past. I would like to give investing in stocks a shot, but I don't honestly know where to start. Obviously a lot of research has to be done, but that's the problem for me. I don't know what to look for and where to even start. It all seems very intimidating for a beginner. Do any of you guys have any helpful advice that can get me started?

Well it is a complicated question that is why no responses yet.

The best way to learn about the market is by knowing how to analyze companies..know how to figure out their business, their profits and margins, figure out how to compare versus other similar companies and versus the market in general.

Then start to watch the markets trade and get a feel for why the markets move and how to find a niche that sets you apart from others.

Finding a company that the market has not found is how you make MORE money than just buying the S&P index fund.

If you have an area of expertise that might give you a leg up in researching companies that really helps..say if you have a degree in biotech and know the insides of a biotech company and might know more than the market does..that is an edge that will make you money.

I would also add: go to bookstore and get a couple of beginner level books. The stock investing for dummies type. They will walk you through everything from how and where to get an account to several novice ways to sort and grade stocks, etc. As WSC mentioned individual stocks are best if you learn them inside and out. Talk to any decent guys you know that may do stock investing. Basically you will be doing on an individual basis what the mutual fund guys are already doing for you. It is a situation where you will learn forever also. Alwasy new ideas and trends and whatnot.

you're never going to get ahead at this game by reading books, its all trial and error and this game is all about it if you "have it" or you don't, get your feet wet playing with some penny stocks, if that works, try moving up to some mid-level stocks.

Like anything in life, to be successful takes hard work and research, you can't cut corners.

You need to give us better info if you want good advice.

How much are you investing? If it is 1000 or less, than commissions on trades are a factor, and you should probably buy 1 or 2 ETFs and hold them for a while.

Is this retirement accounts? If it is, buy and holding several stocks and/or ETFs is the way to go.

Do you want to spend a lot of time researching stocks and following the market and this is just "gambling" money, then there a lot of exotic investments you can do like options or penny stocks.
