Power rankings:
1) Brazil - not based on level of play although it hasn't been bad. The team has it all - sublime attack, flair, buildup, youth, experience, link up play, creativity, speed, width, spine... They have enough but they also have the most pressure. Time for this group to search their souls and ask "do we rise to the pressure of expectations or fold."
2) Belgium - I cannot put France or Spain above them, I simply cannot. For me, the 2nd most talented team on paper. De Bruyne is a maestro and for me, the best player in the world after the big 3. Can Lukaku deliver when competition gets more intense and there is less space to operate, lets see. What about Hazard? Top to bottom, no weaknesses on this team and they are playing well. Still, I have this knawing suspicion that the lack of wingbacks could land them into trouble against better organized sides - they will pose the questions but will they have enough answers.`.
3) Croatia - playing the best team game of any side. And gosh, i love their system. That midfield is boss and simply controls game. Perisic looks the real deal. Couple questions - can Mandzukic really lead the attack of a WC winning side, is there enough in attack...
4) France - young and far from convincing but this team has it all. If Deschamps can enable Paul Pogba into the force that he can being the attacking focal point that frees Mbappe, Dembele, Greizmann watch out. but we have only seen glimpses. Also, can we please get Giroud off the field, he is a liability.
5) Spain - Iniesta is a shell of himself, Costa is a bumbling fool... I am not convinced, still they create so many opportunities that they are tough to bet against... ever
6) Uruguay - the easiest group so this maybe rating them too highly. Still, I like what I am seeing. They can gring out victories, control play, score against the run of play, see off games...
7) England - some would say higher but I am still not convinced that the english style of play creates enough when the going gets tough...
8) Portugal - say it with me Cristiano for presidante, Cristiano for presidante... Uruguay vs Portugal best knockout stage match
9) Columbia - we have seen fits and starts of what they can become... Columbia v. England 2nd best
10) Argengina - I will give them this, they have shown character!
11) Swiss - well coached, compact system and surprising attacking promise
12) Mexico - the feel good story ends now
13)Denmark - well they aren't bad
14) Russia - for the motherland!
15) Sweden - where are you Zlatan, where are you
16) Japan - what was that coach thinking
