Was just searching around a site i use for fantasy looking up some numbers. Then thought to myself hmm lets look up some old guys and see what kind of damage these guys could do in fantasy leagues now a days. Yikes

Ty Cobb. Year 1911.

.420 BA. 8 HR. 147 runs. 127 RBI. 83 SB.

Babe Ruth. Year 1921.

.376 BA. 59 HR. 177 runs. 171 RBI. 17 SB.

Barry Bonds. Year 2001.

.328 BA. 73 HR. 129 runs. 137 RBI. 13 SB.

Mickey Mantle. Year 1956.

.353 BA. 52 HR. 132 runs. 130 RBI. 10 SB.

Ricky Henderson. Year 1982.

.267 BA. 10 HR. 119 runs. 51 RBI. 130 SB

Ted Williams. Year 1941.

.406 BA. 37 HR. 135 runs. 120 RBI. 2 SB.

Sammy Sosa. Year 2001.

.328 BA. 64 HR. 146 runs. 160 RBI. 0 SB.

Lou Gehrig. Year 1927.

.373 BA. 47 HR. 149 runs. 175 RBI. 10 SB.

Damn they are some serious seasons and i only went off some guys i could think of. Have some more? Feel free. I think Ruth takes it down though. Simply amazing

I love the 137rbi with only 8hr, the guy was just a hitting machine. That ricky Henderson and 130sb wow!!! Has anyone been close to that since? Can anyone do that again? And yeah babe ruth is just unfair to have in fantasy baseball. When did fantasy baseball start? It wasn't around back in the old days was it? Imagine having those drafts...

Just looking up some things on baseball almanac, [most rbi's in a season, most runs etc] I think Babe Ruths

1921 season is just sick and the best ever. [As do you]

Babe Ruth. Year 1921.

.376 BA. 59 HR. 177 runs. 171 RBI. 17 SB.

I think Hack Wilson in 1930 was not far behind personally.

Hack Wilson Year 1930

.356 BA, 56HR, 146runs, 191RBI, 3SB

I was also looking at Lou Gehrig's 1931 and 1927 seasons. Very close.

Lou Gehrig. Year 1927.

.373 BA. 47 HR. 149 runs. 175 RBI. 10 SB.

Lou Gehrig. Year 1931

.341BA, 46HR,163 RUNS, 184 RBI, 17SB

I dont know though. I think the .32 point BA difference might make the argument. Thats ALOT! 14runs, 9rbis yeah, even 7sb, very nice. BUT .32 Point BA difference makes 1927 the better year in my opinion. Cool topic.

Holy crap!!!! Those are some insane years.

I can't beleive that fat babe Ruth stole that many bases!!!

Having over 170 rbi's is nuts, talk about some monster years.

Henderson swiped 130, wow. No one will ever come close to that or the RBI season record either.

sammy and bonds don't count though haha, ricky might not count either

but at the same time, these guys were facing much more impressive pitchers, than in the early and mid 1900's, so does the fact that the pitchers of today are better cancel out the fact they were on steroids, therefor putting these power hitters of today on an 'equal playing field' as the great hitters of yesteryear that were hitting off far less superior pitchers???

There are a million factors.

Steroids, which probably help hitters more than pitchers. But amphetamines and cocaine have also been prevalent at one time or another

Ballparks have got smaller

Travel has got a lot easier

Strategies have changed. If you struck out 200 times a year 50 years ago, you would not make it out of A ball

Dead baseballs and juiced baseballs

Bullpen strategies

Scouting

Brush back pitches

Mound heights

Artificial turf

etc
