QB | L. Woodside | Ques Tues Leg 11/09/14 | Woodside suffered a leg injury last game and is questionable to play Tuesday against Northern Illinois. |
The University of Toledo¡¯s biggest game of the season might well come down to a quarterback who never has started a college game and a quarterback who isn¡¯t a quarterback anymore.
Logan Woodside, who replaced the injured Phillip Ely two months ago, is questionable for the Rockets¡¯ game at 8 p.m. today at Northern Illinois with a lower left leg injury. UT coach Matt Campbell said he¡¯s hopeful Woodside can be ready by today, though Woodside¡¯s mobility will be limited even if he does play.
Redshirt freshman Michael Julian took over when Woodside went down Nov. 4 at Kent State, and Campbell said the Rockets have ¡°complete confidence¡± in Julian should he start.
The Rockets also have another option in wide receiver Dwight Macon, a converted quarterback with deep knowledge of the UT offense. UT recruited Macon to play quarterback, where he starred at Steubenville High School, but moved him to receiver because of a deep depth chart that included Terrance Owens and Austin Dantin.
Campbell said the Rockets know that any point that ¡°Dwight could run the offense tomorrow.¡±
¡°I¡¯ll be be quite honest with you, Dwight¡¯s got a big-time arm, he¡¯s athletic and skilled,¡± Campbell said. ¡°The only reason we moved him [from quarterback] was, at the time, we had Austin Dantin and T.O. If Dwight was our quarterback [against NIU], I don¡¯t think you¡¯d see us flinch.¡±
Campbell said UT moved Macon to receiver simply because it couldn¡¯t wait to put him on the field. Before Macon¡¯s redshirt sophomore season in 2012, he and the coaches evaluated the Rockets¡¯ roster.
Only one quarterback plays on nearly every team, and with Dantin and Owens still in the picture, Macon was in line to wait until he was a redshirt senior.
¡°Man, I just wanted to play,¡± Macon said. ¡°Austin and T.O. were here, and it was going to be a while before I got on the field. I asked what I could do to get on the field.¡±
The Rockets didn¡¯t want to wait, either. Their offense usually has at least three wide receivers on the field, and Macon had impressed UT¡¯s staff with his athleticism. The Rockets felt Macon had the skill to play the position, plus Macon had added bonus of a quarterback¡¯s perspective.
The fit was fairly natural.
¡°From that standpoint, it was a smooth transition as far as defensive recognition and things like that,¡± UT offensive coordinator Jason Candle said. ¡°When you¡¯re a quarterback, there comes a sense of natural hand-eye coordination. You just can¡¯t be one without it. Naturally, you have to have that playing receiver too.¡±
Candle compared Macon¡¯s situation to Cecil Shorts III. A former high school quarterback, Shorts switched to wide receiver at Mount Union while Candle was the offensive coordinator there. Shorts thrived and eventually went to the NFL, where he still plays.
Macon still practices at quarterback about once per week. He also saw time during spring practice.
Whoever plays quarterback for the Rockets today will have significant implications resting on his performance. A UT win would all but the clinch the Mid-American Conference West Division.
It would eliminate NIU and Central Michigan, and the Rockets would have a 1?-game lead plus the tiebreaker on Western Michigan, the only other contender in that scenario.
Northern Illinois has been the one entity more responsible than any other for preventing the Rockets from going to Detroit for the conference championship. NIU has won the MAC West four straight times. The Huskies also have beaten UT four times in a row.

NIU gets beat in the end, unless too many penalties by Tolede. Hate when 2 poorly coached teams face off. NIU has underperformed and their MAIN guy is in Minnesota now... Too bad...
Tey will replace him at end of year and especially if they lose this game, and conf. Done.... Another guy escaluted too quickly from OL coach to Head Coach...
