And their offenses looked stagnant against SEC defenses that were mostly considered average in their league.

Alabama brings much better athletes and coaches than Ole Miss and Missou. Think Georgia type athletes which they beat.

Honestly, if you don't give bowl games any weight then there is not enough meaningful data for cross-conference games involving top 25 teams. Need both teams to be top 25 team

UM's non-conference slate this year was bowling green, unlv and  East Carolina. And they are nowhere near unique in having it so weak... 

Here's something:

Alabama and Michigan essentially tied (I would say same about my favourite team in same situation). Alabama beat Georgia. Alabama needed complete miracle play on 4th down to beat Auburn....New Mexico State thrashed Auburn a.week or two before. Does that make NMSU an elite team?
