EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. กช Running back Chris Ivory scored a pair of 1-yard touchdowns Sunday and the New York Jets snapped a two-game losing streak by hanging on to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, 28-23, at MetLife Stadium.
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was 21-of-34 for 272 yards and two touchdowns กช one apiece to wide receivers Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall กช for the Jets, who improved to 5-3.
Quarterback Blake Bortles was 24-of-39 for 381 yards and two touchdowns for the Jaguars (2-6), who missed a chance to move closer to the AFC South lead.
Wide receiver Allen Hurns had five catches for 121 yards and one touchdown while wide receiver Allen Robinson had five receptions for 122 yards for Jacksonville.
The Jaguars had a chance to take the lead with just under six minutes left in the fourth when a 45-yard gain by running back T.J. Yeldon gave Jacksonville a first-and-goal at the Jets' 10-yard-line. But Bortles was strip sacked two snaps later by linebacker Calvin Pace, who recovered the ball at the Jets' 34-yard-line.
The Jets went three-and-out, but cornerback Nick Marshall fumbled the subsequent punt and tight end Kellen Davis recovered. New York iced the game three plays later on Fitzpatrick's 20-yard touchdown pass to Marshall.
Bortles' 20-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bryan Walters with 2:16 left provided the final margin. The Jets recovered the subsequent onside kick but had to punt. Bortles' pass from his own end zone with under a minute left was picked off by Jets cornerback Marcus Williams.
The two teams combined for 17 points in the first quarter before the pace of the game slowed dramatically.
A 45-yard field goal by kicker Jason Myers capped the Jaguars' first drive and gave Jacksonville a 3-0 lead. But the Jets scored on their next two possessions กช on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick to Decker and a one-yard run by Ivory กช to take a 14-3 lead.
The first six possessions of the second quarter ended with punts, but the Jets helped Jacksonville get back in the game by trying to run out the clock after taking over at their own 15-yard-line with 1:30 left. The Jaguars used two timeouts during the subsequent three-and-out, took over at the 50-yard-line following a punt and scored two plays later, when Bortles threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Hurns.
The Jaguars moved into the red zone in their second possession of the third quarter but settled for a 39-yard field goal by Myers. The Jets responded by marching 73 yards in eight plays and taking a 21-13 lead when Ivory plunged in from a yard out.
The Jaguars got within five on Myers' 35-yard field goal with 10:18 left.
NOTES: Among the Jets' inactives were G Willie Colon, who was listed as questionable during the week due to a knee injury. กญ The Jets promoted S Rontez Miles from the practice squad Saturday and released rookie RG Jarvis Harrison. กญ Jets K Nick Folk suffered a right quad injury and was limited to holding for P Ryan Quigley on field goals and PATs. กญ Among the Jaguars' inactives were RB Toby Gerhart, who was stonewalled four straight times from the one-yard-line against the Buffalo Bills in London two weeks ago. กญ Jaguars G Zane Beadles suffered a sprained knee in the first half but returned late in the second quarter. กญ Former Jets general manager John Idzik, who is now a special assistant to the general manager with the Jaguars, watched the game from the press box.
