The Edmonton Oilers are coming off a commanding 7-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks and will look to keep the good times rolling against the visiting New York Islanders at Rogers Place on Tuesday, November 12.
New York is riddled with injuries and has been run over in the possession game while giving up plenty of shots this month, and our top Oilers vs. Islanders predictions are calling for Edmonton winger Jeff Skinner to fill up the shots column.

Edmonton Oilers winger Jeff Skinner paces the club in both shots (12.21) and attempts (20.82) per 60 minutes, and his respective 12.02 and 20.73 marks also lead the way at 5-on-5.
Skinner has bounced around the Edmonton lineup, but he’s set to skate on the No. 1 line with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman against the New York Islanders on Tuesday. It’s been an obvious plus for Skinner’s possession numbers playing with McDavid, too.
The duo has been on the ice for a 57.9 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5, and Skinner sports a 54.2 CF% at 5-on-5 without the superstar center. Also, while there’s no guarantee Skinner sticks with McDavid and Hyman throughout Tuesday’s contest, it does position the first-year Oiler for an early uptick in ice time skating on the top line.
Skinner averaged 14:33 of ice time per game before playing just 12:17 Sunday against the Vancouver Canucks.
I’m also not concerned with the matchup against the Islanders. New York has multiple regulars out of the lineup, including three of their top-six defensemen and go-to-scorer Mathew Barzal. The Islanders have also lost the possession battle in four of five games with Barzal out of action for a 24th-ranked 46.3 CF% at 5-on-5 while also allowing the third-most shots per night (34.6).
Finally, I also value Skinner’s shot and attempts skyrocketing on home ice.

Edmonton breaking out for seven goals during Sunday’s win over Vancouver was a long time in the making because the Oilers still have significant statistical correction ahead of their 28th-ranked 6.9 team shooting percentage at 5-on-5. The Oil have also scored the 11-fewest goals per 60 (2.29) at 5-on-5 despite generating the fifth most (2.96).
Add a 24th-ranked 15.8 power-play percentage that’s also set for positive regression considering the Oil posted a fourth-ranked 26.3% mark last year, and things are looking up for the Edmonton offense..
Still, another seven-goal outburst probably won’t be in the cards. Even with the Islanders noted recent struggles they’ve allowed the fifth-fewest goals (1.85) and expected goals (2.26) per 60 while also receiving excellent goaltending with a .933 team save percentage at 5-on-5.
On the flip side, New York has scored the eighth-fewest goals (2.09) and generated a middling 2.51 per 60 at 5-on-5.
