MWC: You have any DO's? It just sounds like you hate tourists with all the Dont's. Granite I agree with you that is a great list of Dont's but give us some good things to DO from a local's POV.
On the contrary, I don't hate tourists. Some people that live here do and they're freaking morons because last I checked, this is a tourist town (although, it's pretty much a regular city away from the strip).
When I'm on the strip I embrace it because people are on vacation and generally having a good time. Who doesn't like people in good moods and having good time? I know I do. So, it's cool.
As far as Do's, I always recommend this book for guys, it's pretty much spot on with just about everything:

DON'T go to Ellis Island, you will shit your pants on the taxi ride home
I believe you are in the minority of people I have seen or heard of that have anything negative to say about EI. I had a good barbecue one time and the "not on the menu" steak dinner the second. Loved the barbecue ribs and the steak dinner was a great value. Plus the brewery had 22 oz drafts for $1.50. I can see if you are too old or too snobby, how this would not be the place for you. It's not for everyone.

Do watch the movie Vegas Vacation the day before you leave for Vegas
Haha, it's on my ipod and I watched it on the flight last time I went. This year is between Casino, The Hangover, or Vegas Vacation again...that movie never gets old.

"Rated" means that the moment you walk to the table, hand the pitboss your id & tell them to give you a players card. Then he/she will "RATE" your play. That is make an observation of, 1) what table game you are playing, 2) how long you play 3) your average bet etc. This is all recorded & then you may get COMPED meaning "free" stuff. The STUFF depends on how strong the casino thinks you are. Comps can mean anything from cheap show tickets, a free meal, to FREE EVERYTHING (event tickets, flight, suite, meals etc) even REBATES on LOSES for WHALES. Hope this helps...
GET RATED!!!!!
Thank You..I just play the sports at the sportsbook..I learned something

Just giving my experience. I wasn't exxagerating. I literally shit my pants on the way back to the MGM. It was definitely a nice meal while I was eating it, very inexspensive too. I had to turtle walk into the MGM bathroom and leave my boxers in there. No joking.

Don't do your fucking handicapping at the betting window. Write the numbers down beforehand, and have your cash ready. Don't be a fucking douchebag standing there looking up at the board trying to find your numbers for your 5 dollar fucking 10 leg parlay.
Don't stop in the middle of a walking isle or sidewalk with a group of people to have a chat. Move off to the side...the isles and sidewalks are for walking, which is what people will be trying to do.
Don't be the cheapass douchebag that puts a dollar in the video poker machine and plays one credit in order to get your "free" drink. And then argue with the bartender when he refuses you or tells you to play max credit. Free drinks have tightened up in Vegas, expect it.
Don't be the douchebag that expects free drinks all fucking day in the sportsbook because you've bet $50 on the Super Bowl. Newsflash, they don't give a fuck about your 50 dollar bet. The sportsbook's annual take is only 2-3% total on the casino's income. Therefore, it's their sinkhole already, so their not that thrilled about giving free drinks away. Again they could care less.
In general, just don't be a cheapass. If you're that fucking worried about free drinks, you shouldn't be on vacation. Simple as that.
Don't act like a jackass simply becauase you're in Vegas.
Don't be a box about the porn slapper cards. Grab a few. Take them home with you. Leave them on the bar and on the blackjack table in full view. Have fun with it.
Don't assume that the local poker players are better than you. They're probably not.
That's all for now....
Being a Vegas local for 10 years I can say this is one of the better posts i have ever read on Vegas.

If your trying to kill a little time and get free drinks. Just put a 20 in a keno/video poker machine thats attached to the bar. They generally give you all the drinks you want if you continue to play.
That's how it was at Mandalay Bay and MGM

I will probably piss the locals off like MWC and MickeyRivers but it's simply my opinion.
DO: Fuck Vegas as much as you can. I might be a cheap ass but half the fun of Vegas is thinking you're getting free drinks. Hell I can go to several casinos within 2 hrs of me if I want to play casino games and buy my drinks.
DO: Fuck Vegas as much as you can. Vegas got greedy. Has tightened everything up. So get pissed at me for getting free drinks on my $50 game wager and $1 in a vp machine but I should be happy when a blackjack session turned into an avg of $25 a beer??
DO: Tip your waitress what you feel comfortable with.
DONT: Over tip for pissy dealers/waitresses. Last couple years with the economy hurting Vegas I've noticed a big difference in customer service. It's not our fault your lavish lifestyle of slinging drinks and dealing cards was turned upside down. So has most of America's. You should be happy we are there. A big portion of America has or is opening casinos. Make Vegas a reason for coming.
Vegas is my favorite city. But the one thing that pisses me off is locals who feel like we owe them something for coming. We're playing negative expectation games all trip and the "free" alcohol adds to our losses. It's not our responsibility to make sure you make $75,000 for giving us a drink. I am a generous tipper when the service is good and the server/dealer doesn't act like we are there to hand over more money than is deserved. I wish the tips weren't pooled so some of these grumps would make jack shit.
It's a new era. Vegas better wake up and get back to good gambling and good service or more people will decide to stay nearby their homes and gamble.

I'm heading there in less than 2 weeks...taking some of this attitude with me. "Free" drinks never end up being "free"

I have no problem tipping...I just don't feel that over tipping, for no reason is needed.
Dealers I'll tip if they are friendly, are conversational and at least cheer you on rather than being grumpy and have that look like they're glad to take your money.
To everyone else, it's judged on the service and experience.

Because we tip based on quality of service and attitude?? What a novel concept.
No....just ask anyone who has been in the service industry in Vegas for a while. People from the Midwest and blacks have always been known to be horrible tippers. Not a racist thing ...Just the truth.
I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt the 1st time around when serving them but I can see how other bartenders /cocktailers/servers see you guys coming and just automaticly give you guys bad service because they know whats coming.

Take a chill pill there "VegasVeteran". Believe it or not, I agree with some of what you say.
Just an fyi, I don't work in the service industry, not even close. The company I'm working for now doesn't have anything to do with the casinos, I could be doing this in Anycity, USA.
What's with this "fuck Vegas" attitude? Where the hell did that come from? And your handle is VegasVeteran??? Dude.
...................
Seriously though, instead of "fuck Vegas" you should be more specific and be saying, "fuck the casinos." THAT I agree with. They've got greedy, the corporations that took over have ruined it. They will fuck you any and every chance they get - that is a fact.
I never mentioned anything about tipping. I mentioned free drinks. I'm not saying you don't derserve them. All I was pointing out was how, when and why to expect them without looking like a douche.
And yeah, I agree, get what you can because they are there to fuck you. I live here, and that's my attitude as well (towards the casinos, not the regular folks that work there). But remember, so was the mob when they owned Vegas. But don't take it out on the help, everyone needs to make a living. Unless you're getting shitty service, then fuck 'em. I cannot and will not stand for bad service.
My post was aimed as advice so you don't look like a douchebag when here, simple as that.

One of my best friends is from Iowa. He's the worst tipper I've ever seen in my life. And, it's not because he's being an ass, he's just programmed that way. He'll leave 2 bucks on a 50 dollar check and genuinely think that's ok.

I will make a comment on the tipping thing....

I just laughed so hard I almost pissed my pants. Thanks battles that was the funniest thing I've read in a while.
MWC: Thanks for recommending that book. I'll check it out for some reading material during my flight out there this weekend. I'll be the only midwesterner giving fat tips.

Do-Go to the roulette table & try to hit a # (that you've been thinking about) at least one time. With a small bet like ($20 on #14), because you counted 14 hookers on the way from your room to the table (lmao)..... Pays 35-1

As a Vegas local I can agree with some of things said in here. These ones in particular I can get on board with.
1. Stopping and standing in the middle of a walkway. That drives me crazy. Don't do it.
2. Waiting until you're up at the betting window to decide what you want to bet instead of going over all the games beforehand and having your shit prepared. Don't do this either.
Here is one I want to add.
Dont get into a car and drive around without having a clear idea of where you are going and how to get there. There are so many easy ways now to get detailed maps of all areas and driving directions on the internet so you should not need to be slowing your car down or stopping in the middle of a busy street to look around and see where you want to go.
Another thing to add on to this is DO NOT be slowing down or stopping your car when driving around the Strip to take pictures. If you want to take pics then walk around the Strip and take all the pics you want.
Dont be a loud, obnoxious drunk person. This rule stands everywhere, not just in Vegas. I can't stand seeing people get drunk off their ass and act like loud idiots. Just don't be that person!
